| I've just been sent seeds for "Mary Italian"tomatoes. Does anyone know what kind of beastie they are.? Am I to expect 2 pound whoppers, or small chartreuse currants?. |

| Yoo hoo, here I am. But I not the virgin you hoped for. My guess is I'm your Italian grandmother... Grandma Mary's Paste #6099 (30 seeds) $2.05 This familiar heirloom variety has large, pointed red paste tomatoes that are meaty and flavorful, just right for cooking into sauce or chopping up for fresh use. Expect abundant harvests, as these plants are prolific. Indeterminate. 70 days. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Hi guys I suspect they are a variety that our US Dr.Carolyn received to trial, and that she named them "Mary Italian". She always seems happy to provide more info in the US Tomato Forum on any of the varieties she sends out, probably because there are other folks who are growing it (or will be) who would like to know as well. PP |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
thanks kids for the info. I bet I'll take one bite and start ranting like an old italian grandmother, like Sleeping Beauty in reverse. Oh well, it's a day out for me. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Thanks PP for the parcel today. Mine had Mary Italian in there as well. Should we use this thread for an old seed growout disscussion. If so, here goes. I am going to soak my 5 oldies tommorow night and sow them Sat morning. They will go in punnets in my usual way. Potting mix then seeds then seed raising mix on top. Then onto a heat mat out in the shed and a plastic tub over them to keep up the humidity. Say a wee prayer to the gods of earth and water and all things that grow, and then wait. Cheers and thanks again PP for all your work packaging and posting and, and, everything. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.

ray's went really well last year using that method Oz, so I'm doing the same , as well as some I couldn't fit in last year. Like Clear Pink Early, Moldovan green etc. These were ten years old last year, so I'm changing the name to Lazarus. ONLY KIDDING> our first Paragon has showed 'is little head. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Yer welcome Mantis. I've got some Mary Italian and a couple others set aside for Finbar to show off in Italy next season, just need him to answer my request for his address.... Ya there Finbar? Cooo-ee! Calling Finbar! PP |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
He doesn't understand Coo-ee anymore Pattie. He's swanning 'round Italy, not caring a tinker's cuss for us poor plebs. Actually, he's probbly at home gorging on tommies. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Patrina, Many thanks for the seeds you sent. They arrived two days ago and my eyes nearly popped when I saw the selection. Unfortunately, I have run out of room this season to plant any more, but I'm very tempted to drag out a few large pots and try a few. Thank you again for your generosity. I really enjoy being able to trial so many different tomatoes. I'll also be saving seed and be happy to provide anything you want. I love trialling tomatoes, and being able to share that with you all make it all that more pleasurable. Mark |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Yeah, that's the pity. I had already finished sowing my seeds when PP's envelope got here. I did sneak in a few from the selection, but.... Don't you just loooove all those weird names of the varieties!?? Isn't it just amazing?! |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Okay, which ones did you all get?. I got one called "STICK". I think it looks like a wooly stick, and one called Grosse Violette, sounds like a naughty french girl. then there's Cuor de Bue, Phil's fantasy, Basinga, etc. Every time I try to tell people the variety names, they think I'm making it up. Try telling someone you have a tomato called Kimberley!!. They think it's something unnatural going on. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
I got Stick as well. From all reports it is novelty value only. Grows very upright with leaves that look like cauliflour ears. I have: Mary Italian 97 Golden Ponderosa 95 Croatia 97 Victorian Dwarf 95 And am just about to go and fill the wee bagies with water and put them aside till tommorow. Also got Dr Lyle oldies, but an answer to a question to Dr Carolyn suggests that they would not give a plant any different to the Dr Lyle from TGS, that I already have in. So if anyone would like these seeds to try, email me. Earls Faux is going on the heat mat in the morn as well, cant wait to see what this fella gives up. Grosse Violette, LOL. I just had a vision of an adults version of Bill and Ben flower pot men. Oh my, best go and get another beer Mantis |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?!!
| | |
Here are the oldies in their bagies of water.
 |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
aren't they sweet?. I 'spose i should give a full list. AHEM...... Rasp Large Red. Grosse violette, '96. Basinga '97 Stick Katinka, cherry Indian Stripe, comparable to Cherokee purple Cuor de Bue, '95 Pineapple fog, large cherry. Rinaldo. Dr Lyle '96 Mary Italian '97 Yasha Yugoslavian '97 Phil's Fantastic. Noire de Coseboeuf '95 These should keep me going 'til Doomsday. I'm hoping Kimberley is with Child by November. A friend wants to have good tomatoes for her wedding. Wish us luck. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Mark, glad they arrived OK. The generosity isn't mine, but is our friends' in the US Tomato Forum... all I do is write all those wee little labels and count out the seeds to make them go around. Most people got what they asked for, plus some received a couple extras that Carolyn or Craig had included for anyone. My hope is that we get these to grow successfully, save seeds, and then share them around with anyone here who wants some for next year, and so on! Mantis, I thought you'd like to try the Victorian Dwarf since it's originally from your state. Good luck folks! PP |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
They are in and on the heat mat. Earls Faux and Citron Compact got in the mix as well. Go Figure. Sorry, did I say that. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Thanks Patrina for my parcel as well. You are too modest. It takes a lot of time to organise and package seeds and the expense of sending them. We all appreciate it very much! I have sown Green Giant, Pineapple Fog, JD Special CTex, and the Red BonneyWein F1 Hybrid. Don't know where I will fit them but there always seems to be room. They were raving about Green Giant at the CHOPTAG this year. Can't wait to try it! Cheers Craig |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Me, too, Craig. Me, too. Thanks again, PP. :)))) Heaps of thing are UP now. :) |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
You're too modest Patrina. Craig is right on the money. Here is what my envelope of joy contained: High Crimson 95 Peace 95 Grosse Violette 96 Mary Italian 97 Pale Perfect Purple Pineapple Fog White Oxheart Raspberry Large Red Lyuda's Large Red Ukranian Green Giant Druzba Moldovan Green Golden Egg Old Yellow Candystripe Pink Plum Kornesevsite Giant Fiolet Ida Gold Burpee's Quarter Century Aunt Ginny's Purple Wow! Now comes the hard part...deciding what can be shoehorned in this season and what has to wait until the next. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Pineapple Fog and Green Giant are up. :)) I may be tempted to sneak a few more goodies in. I better go and make more garden beds. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.

| Hey, down under friends - from Craig in NC, USA. For those who got Kimberly, be sure to grow out only potato leaf seedlings. Though not large, it comes on very quickly to provide lots of nice flavored red fruit - larger than a cherry, kind of ping pong ball sized. For me, it is the first really good flavored non cherry tomato. Stick is certainly a conversation piece. If allowed to get fully ripe, the flavor is pretty good...it is a must for the topiary garden (though to me it has more of a poodle effect!). It was actually sold in the 1950's by the first seed company that featured the wierd and wild - Gleckler. It is apparently a mutation from the older variety Stokesdale. Rasp Large Red (NOT Raspberry - it is named for Tom Rasp of NY, who donated it to the SSE) is a really good medium to medium large, nearly red tomato with excellent flavor and yield. Katinka Cherry is one that Reinhard Kraft sent me. It is a very productive golden cherry tomato - it should be compared to Sungold hybrid in flavor, yet it is not hybrid, which gives it an advantage. I will look forward to comments on it - Mike Dunton of Victory is probably going to carry it next year. Green Giant was my best flavored variety, and yes, did win the CHOPTAG tasting. Another from Reinhard Kraft, please only grow out the potato leaf seedlings (if you get reg leaf, they are likely a cross). The plants are healthy and yield well, fruit are up to one pound, pale green, do not get an amber yellowish color like Cherokee Green, so should be watched carefully for when they are ripe (they get soft, of course, and also get a pale pink tint at the blossom end). There are few seeds, and it reminds me of a green fleshed Lillian's Yellow in flavor and meatiness. JD Special C Tex was sent to me by Fusion in Alabama - he got it from Scott in Texas - apparently it is a selection of a cross between Brandywine and Cherokee Purple. for me, I got large, oblate dusky pinkish purple fruits, similar to Cherokee Purple, very meaty and great flavor. White Oxheart - also from Reinhard Kraft, very attractive and productive, ivory colored medium to large true heart shape, very good flavor for a white. Lyuda's Mom's Red Ukrainian was from an American GW poster, really nice large red fruit, nearly round, excellent productivity and flavor. I sent to Patrina all of the more recent great discoveries from varieties recently sent to me. I hope that they all do well for all of you! Craig in North Carolina |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Hi Craig, thanks for the info on those varieties! It sure is exciting - I'm looking forward to everyone's results with these varieties too! Will post a list of what I'm growing later once I know what has germinated.... I took short cuts and am nervously hovering over the flats to see what will come up. My desk lamp that I used for a heat source needs fixing, so I by-passed the pre-germination technique that has worked so well for me in the past. Patrina |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Nice to hear from you Craig and thanks for the info. We've gone back to winter where I live so everything will be set back a little: -35 deg centigrade wind chill yesterday and cloud cover so the hot house remained rather chilly all day!!!! |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Thanx for the info, your Craigness. Can't wait for Katinka to emerge. Have one Kimberly pushing through, so if a wrong leaf I'll put her to death. MOO HOO HAH HAH |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| They sound great, Craig. I'll just have to sow them all and slash some of the others. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| About ruthlessness with reg leaf seedlings....it is all a matter of how much room you have and your desire for adventure! Any reg leaf seedlings that pop up from potato leaf varieties I send are F1 hybrids. The F1s, if grown out, may or may not be all that great (if I would have thrown away the reg leaf seedling that emerged from my 1993 saved seed of Brandywine, I would never have ended up with Little Lucky and Lucky Cross!). The F2s are another thing, and if the accidental cross is really wide in terms of the difference of the parents, you can get some really odd looking stuff. Craig |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
G'day Craig, Thanks for the information, it's all very interesting. I guess we all like a mystery...I'll be planting out the Little Lucky RL tom I have tomorrow. Mark |
Oops!
| | |
| Oops.....thanks also Craig for pointing out it's Rasp Large Red, not Raspberry. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Purple Calabash - is it regular leaf or potato leaf? I've sown 3 and got 2 RL and 1 PL. :( |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Spatz, Isn't it about time you did some work? ;) Yor have it bad. Lol I looked at Craig's homepage and he says Purple Calabash is RL. So your PL in a RI as in ring-in or throwback or whatever. See nctomatoman.topcities.com/2005_Season/2005TomatoStrategy.htm PC is plant 75 on the list. And do have a look around his amazing site when you have the time. Great source of info, I reckon. Eggplants and peppers next. Yes? |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Thanks, Grub. Will have to check Graig's homepage later. The PL will have to go. Unless somebody wants to pick it up and give it a good home. Work? *shudders* Chillies, Capsicums and Eggplants are sown and already repotted. Pumpkins, Melons, Zucchinis, Squash and Cucumbers are sown and already germinated. :) Hmmm... direct sowing of other stuff has to wait. I'm getting hungry just thinking of all the goodies that should be in the garden this season. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Purple Calabash - definitely regular leaf! A potato leaf seedling is rare indeed for that variety, and would be indicative of either a mutation or seed mix up. It is a very distinctively shaped tomato - highly ridged/creased at the shoulder, and the dark dusky rose purplish color of Cherokee Purple... Wow, so many experiments to run! Craig |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Oh, no, Craig (sorry I misspelled your name in the previous post.) Are you saying that it might be worth growing the PL out? *slowly getting worried about space in the garden now* |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Yes Spatz, definitely you have to find room, even if it's just a hole where your down pipe drips and you forget about it the whole season! *grin* PP |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Spatz, I grew Purple Calabash last year. My goodness did they have a long season!!. They were quite late where I was in my little backyard. They have the most amazing colour. Dark Pink with brown shoulders, and almost blood red inside. IMHO, the most flavoursome, and the most ugly Tomato Ever!! They look awful, but when used in cooking , or just eaten whole, they are SUBLIME. The tartness is almost too much, but the most tomatoey tomato ever. They look rough, but when sliced , they taste soft and juicy. Have you worked out that i like them yet?. They should be compulsory growing. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Adam, do you like Purple Calabash? |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?!
| | |
But seriously, I could say that I had similar thoughts about Brandywine suddeths last season. I had a lot of toms that were wonderful but BWS was sublime. I have one in the greenhouse going well and two that are grafted (i hope) onto stronger rootstock. Not sure where I am going to put them as space is rapidly running out, but I will try to find a spot. Mantis *More roses must die, MMuHHa MHUHHHHaaha* |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Adam, Carolyn wote re Mary: "I searched several back SSE Yearbooks and it looks like Mary Italian is one I never listed. In my move up here in 1999 all my previous data books somehow didn't appear, as in were accidentally thrown out in the last minute rush before moving, but whatever, I don't have them to check either. My recollection, vague tho it may be going back to the early 90's is indet, RL, red beefsteaks, not a paste as one might assume. The funny thing is that even now I can close my eyes and tell you where it was growing in a field that had upwards of 800 plants. LOL So whoever grows it will have to tell me what it is. LOL" So do follow up with a report. :)Grub, sans Purple Calabash and not growing Sudduth this year, but definitely in agreement with Mantis. One heck of a compled taste and well balanced like a fine wine. Got about a dozen fruits from one vine tops. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| I reckon I got about 20 fruit from my BW suddeth last year in the greenhouse. This year I have another in the greenhouse and two that are grafted onto New Gippsland Seeds rootstock. Not sure if this will increase the yeild or not, but thought it was worth a try. Cheers Mantis |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| i can't wait to hear how they do on the new rootstock, Mantis. You might be onto something for those with nematodes and stuff. See if you can graft onto a perennial. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| I think I had 2 tomatoes off my plant. The plant itself was a bit miserable, too. It might have been the location, though. I'm not growing it this year, but may give it another go in a year or two. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Spatz, I got ZERO, nada, naught and zip off the plant in its first season. Managed to overwinter a limb, which I cut and simply stuck straight in the ground. It came back in August and hit a growth period in Spring, which is when most of the fruit set. I think it's really fickle with those open bloom shapes. I think it prefers mild temps. Didn't much like the Sydney summer and got whacked by EB. Maybe a good one for your greenhouse or winter crop. Which you should be planning now :))) |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Speaking of winter crops, how are the Polar Babys going Spatz. Any ripe ones yet?? |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Oz, no ripe ones yet. It has only started flowering a short while ago. But it looks very good. Flower buds coming up everywhere. Must take a picture soon. :) |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Haven't read for a few days. Thanx Grub(and Cazza) for the info on Mary Ital. Should be interesting. I reckon if Queen Cazza can remember it , it must have been OK. Ozman. and I both have it I think. Both in cooler climes, but a comparison nontheless. Spatz, a woman i know loves a bit of bottling. Purple Wondrous Calabash go very well in a jar. Taste like they're already Pasted. Or is that Plastered?. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| First of the sowing of 17th is poking through. A Lucky Cross. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| One Earls Faux up, WAHOO !! |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| I have four up. Can't stand the thought of having to kill the spares. One Prue up. Yahoo! |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Day 7. 2 Lucky Cross, 2 Earls Faux and 2 Citron Compact up but no oldies as yet. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Day 8. One Mary Italian and 3 Golden Ponderosa. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Good to see some of those oldies emerging Mantis! PP |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Grew BWS last year. One plant, one tomato, absolutely the largest tomato I've ever seen. The fruit fly thought they were in heaven. It was so big it split badly several times. Then it rained and the whole thing turned into a stinking, rotten mass of FF maggots. Think I'll pass this year. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| You are in a different spot now Ray, maybe the fruit fly aren't so bad there. They are worth the effort I reckon. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Apparently the fruit fly up here go for fruit trees, stone fruit especially, and leave the tommies alone somewhat. Let's hope so. Today I had a Pineapple Fog, a Katinka and an Indian Stripe break through. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| 16 days on and finaly one Victorian Dwarf up. Will give Croatia a few more days, then the heat mat goes under my mushroom box :-) |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| 1 Victorian Dwarf, 1 Zogola, 1 Grosse Violette. :) |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Must have a dozen Golden Ponderosas up. Anyone want a seedling? |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
Finally got a Rinaldo and a Mary Italian up.And a Yasha; I would like a seedling Ozman. Do you use the Pepperina method?. |
RE: Mary, Who are you ?.
| | |
| Isn't it a thickshake straw or something and a bubble postage envelope? I need some ideas. Mantis |
