Replacing an apple tree

Hi everyone

Hopefully just a quick bit of advice needed. After persisting with a very, very old apple tree for 6 plus years since we moved into our Victorian era house, hoping that I could bring some fruit back onto it that were nice, its time to move it on and replace it with another apple (I'm thinking perhaps one of those fruit salad apple trees - any thoughts on these?).

I know that it is probably not idea to replant an apple back into the same spot as the one I just pulled out, however unfortunately that is my only option due to lack of space. My question is can I replant straight away or should I wait for the soil to 'replenish'?

many thanks in advance
Ian

RE: Replacing an apple tree

It is getting a bit late to plant one now as they are starting to blossom and are best planted while dormant. The tree would get very stressed if you planted now. It's a good idea to wait until winter next year and meantime build up the soil with compost and manure and mulch then let it lay fallow while the worms work the soil for you. No reason not to plant in the same spot assuming the old tree had no disease.

Thanks cosmicgardener for the info. I will hold off until next winter for the new tree & will in the meantime improve the soil as you suggest.

I just wish I wasn't so impatient :)
