| Hi all- this is my first message to gardenweb but as a brand-new-new-newbie gardener I've been lurking around for a little while now gathering advice for my very fledgeling (so far all in containers) garden.
I'm hoping you can help me out here!
I'd given up on the idea of growing beans this year because my garden only gets full sun in the front, and I feel like I've already used up every spare ray of light with a pot of herbs, a zucchini plant or some tomatoes. But I had an AHA! moment on the bus and wondered if I could possibly attempt to train pole beans up the security grille of the big front windows- these windows are already getting 5 full hours of spring sun & they'll be getting more as summer wears on. I assume I could start beans in raised pots to take advantage of the sun & then train the vines up the thick security bars.
Can anyone suggest good varieties to try this with? I'm VERY new to gardening (have exploded from one sad little pot of basil last year to 12 types of herbs & 5 types of vegies this year- hope I'm not being too ambitious but it's all just so exciting!). The more forgiving the variety the better!
Also since the support for the beans will be pretty much a straight line, should I plant the seeds in straight lines rather than the teepee formation? Or can I plant them in the 'grid' style and then just train them back to the straight line? And should I run string from the pots up to the bars (about 50cm) so the beans can get up there? As you can tell I'm quite clueless.
I specifically wanted to ask the Australia forum because I figured you guys might be able to direct me to varieties that actually work in the Sydney climate. Also feel free to heap advice upon me about what works here & what doesn't- it's not especially easy to translate knowledge directly from the Northern Hemisphere forums!
Thanks all,
