Shallots - when to plant?

Posted by Sparaxis Vic Aust (My Page) on

I bought some shallots at the supermarket last week. They were labelled "French shallots" but look just like potato onions to me. I looked up the details in my Yeates garden guide, which says they should be planted in Autumn.
Should I store them until then, eat them and buy more later, or plant them? They were much cheaper bought from the vegie dept than from NG seed farm or elsewhere. I am personally in favour of putting them in the ground and seeing what happens.

Mine started shooting about three weeks ago so I just pushed them into the ground. You really need a lot of them for cooking as they don't go very far.

I think for the amount of onions we eat, i would need to plant out 1/4 acre! :-)
Thanks - I will pop them in the ground this week and see what happens.
