Seed Savers USA

Hi Everyone,

Are any Aussie tomato fanatics a member of the above organisation?
I have been debating paying US$50.00 to join, but wonder if it is worth it when people like Patrina, Ray and others share seed received from the USA.
Your thoughts please ladies and gentlemen!

Mark

Hello Mark.
You have asked a good question. I am a member and have been so for two years. I offer three varieties of tomato. I have never had a request. And yes, I have never requested seed from a SSE member. In fact I am one of a few Aussie members.
I agree in principle with SSE aims and like the fact that a tomato variety can be preserved through such efforts.
However, there are two concerns with this organisation. The first is it funds and supports some fairly radical green groups and some arguments I disagree with. Second, not all SSE members are dedicated and mixed seed or even mis-labeled seed is common.
Will I continue to be a member? Not sure. I am assessing the worth of contributing to the Garden Web Tomato Forum at this stage-let alone membership of SSE.
Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig,
Thanks for your input.
My main reason for considering joining was access to varieties of tomatos, but your comments about mixed and mislabelled seed was one of my major concerns.
Also, the fact that I have been able to get seed from USA tomato fans like Craig Lehoullier and Dr. Carolyn Male via Patrina, Ray and others here in Oz has made me wonder if joining the SSE is worthwhile.

On another subject...from Grub's thread on the USA forum:
"The latest on LXP will definitely interest you. From last season's efforts I now have LXP segregations coming out my ears. An original RL pink fruit selection with all the LXP qualities, a largish orange cherry RL, two variants of black fruit, and, would you believe it, a bicoloured PL selection? There is no way I can trial all these selections this season. If any of the Aussie/NZ forum members would like to try some of the above segregates then please contact me."

I'd be happy to try one of your segregates this season. My choice would be the bicolored PL, but I'd be pleased to help you out with any selection you wished to send. I'll email you with my mailing address and leave it up to you.

Actually our patron Craig LeHoullier is also a Dr... I'm looking forward to calling a variety Dr Craig because then there'd be both a "Dr Carolyn" and a "Dr Craig" variety.

Now, if only those darned Lucky Cross X Black Krim seeds from a cross I did last year would germinate!

I joined the SSE last year, mainly to support their work. Buying tommie seeds through them is difficult. They told me I would need a US$100 minimum order before they would process it. Their focus is very much local. However, you can get tommies from their members who offer once a year in the Year Book. I got several last year.
Another possibility is our very own Seed Savers' Network (SSN) who offer seeds themselves in the autumn and whose members offer in spring (just received the spring newsletter today). They do good work too but their focus is very different to that of the SSE.
Another is the Henry Doubleday Research Association, either the local one or the UK parent. The local one is very small with limited seeds. The parent is huge and has an enormous seed collection.

Thanks for the info PP. How many crosses have you attempted?

Ray, thank you also for your info. To be honest, since I posted this thread PP has sent me so many varieties that I've already got the next two seasons covered!

Really???, Patrina sent seeds to someone????.
I'm still growing mine from last year!!. At least now I have the room to do it.
And I just potted up this year's prezzies from Princess PP.
God , I love this time of year.
