Hi All,

I recently bought a gooseberry bush.
Would anyone have any information as to where I should plant it? sun or shade etc.

Thanks
Gill

RE: Gooseberries

Here's a summary of what Louis Glowinski has to say.

Heavy soils tolerated though good drainage preferred. They love well rotted manure. The longest lived of all the berries, bearing for up to 50 years. Trained as for most berries though can be trained as a standard. Fruit is produced on last saeson's wood as well as spurs. Thinning produces better, larger berries but is so tedious as to be hardly worth the effort.

He doesn't mention sun but I'm guessing they'd be like other berries - the more sun, the more fruit. When I asked at a local nursery if youngberries would grow in shade, the person responded with a yes. There was a pause, the she said, but of course you won't get any fruit!!!

Hope this helps.

I used to pick them along the hedgerows in England when I was a kid - so I preume they don't need much sun...I don't remember my part of England actually having any sun at all ;-)

RE: Gooseberries

g'day gill,

they get full sun where i planted mine but they will grow in less as i note the ones around the treed areas get good light and some sun, i think though that maybe ours in the full sun fruit better. also after last summer being so dry and very poor fruiting it would appear they like good watering.

len with a new web addy.

RE: Gooseberries

When we were kids we used to have them coming up everywhere, sun and shade, we got sick of eating the fruit. The ones in the sun will do better. They like water but not wet feet. I haven't had any luck with any since I moved here. A grub gets into the berry and eats it all, just leaving a nearly intact case. You would think you were picking a nice one and discover nothing except droppings inside. Hope you have more luck.
