Hey Raymondo! Brandywine SS

Hi Ray,
Thank you for all the seeds you have sent.
All are growing well.
A question re Bradywine Sudduth's Strain...is it a RL or PL?
I managed to germinate six of the seeds you sent and have five PL & one RL.
Please advise.

Mark
PS: Please do send a "how to" on posting a picture in a forum post.

G'day Mark,
As far as I can remember, Brandywine SS should be PL. The RL could be a rogue seed, or even a mutation to RL. PL is a recessive characteristic and it's not unusual, though quite rare, to see it revert to the dominant RL form.
Hope this helps.
Ray
PS 'How to' is on its way.

Hi Mark
Yes Brandywine Suddeth should be PL. Like the one third from the left in this pic.

OK now I am intrigued... what does RL and PL mean?

RL = regular leaf, one with the jagged edges normally associated with tomato leaves.

PL = potato leaf, one with relatively smooth edges, usually with some scalloping. So called because it resembles the leaves of a potato plant.

Thanks for the clarification Ray. I'll grow out the RL one along with the RL Lucky Cross seedling I have just to see what happens.

Thanks also Mantis for the photo. My BWSS are about the size of your seedlings near the spout of your watering can. However, even at this size I can see "one of these things is not like the others" ;-)

Yes Mark, you can tell the difference soon after the first true leaves emerge.
These ringins are fun to grow out just to see what they give up. I have two RL Marianas Peace and one RL Prudens Purple that I will have to find space for.
I also have lots of volunteers coming up in the greenhouse, with one of them being a PL, that has come up on the other side of the gh from the one PL plant I had in there last year.
Its all fun eh.

Thanks Ray for the info re posting pics. I'll read it a few times and give it a go soon.
Sure is fun Mantis....sure is!

Hi Guys
It is almost inevitable that the RL plant is a F1 which has come about from insect pollination during fruiting last year rather than a sport
Beafsteak type varieties are particularly prone to crossing as are PL strains and BW(S) is both.
It is best to grow the two above types in the garden so that they are surrounded by other plants thus making crossing less likely
Honey bees (European)are generally not keen on tomato flowers but some native bees are, and you do get some crossing as a result.
Strangely enough one other group of tomatoes which do have extended pistils (the Currant types) do not seem to get any crossing... if anyone has ever had an experience to the contrary (with Currant type tomatoes), I would be very grateful to hear about it.

Hi folks
I am growing out a RL not Marianas Peace that came from up north. Apparently the only tomato growing near it was a Brandywine, also a PL, so I am not sure what it will be.

I also had a RL come up with my BW so I will have to rogue that out.
