Planting after Cauliflowers?

Posted by blackcat2 NSW Aust (My Page) on

I'm pretty new to veggie gardening and have just had my Caulies bolt on me :( Well. I think that's the term - they're quite small and no longer compact. They'll be coming out for tomorrow's dinner I think.

Anyway, I was wondering what is a good crop to put in AFTER caulies?? Can anyone throw some suggestions my way.

I have some Eggplant seeds on the way (from Diggers) and thought I may be able to plant those there, but I'm impatient LOL. I don't want a bare garden while I'm waiting for the Eggplants to germinate (which for me seems to take FOREVER! but that's another topic). Otherwise I have some heirloom tomatoes that are looking for a spot. Will they be okay there do you think?

A little to one side of your question, if you're seeding you'll want to clean old leaves of Cabbage Family members as they release a germination inhibitor as they break down.

RE: Planting after Cauliflowers?

g'day blackcat,

i plant all my summer crops straight after all the brassicas are gone, in our case and the way we do it we mulch the spent plants back where they grew, so if need be we plant beside that spot or if app' 2 weeks elapses and the mulching has finished or well advanced we plant in that spot, any unmulched material is simply pulled back enough to allow planting.

the mulching occurs under the mulch hay that we use. never had any issues with this system, and the medium gets lots of nutrients. all our kitchen scraps go the same way, no fertiliser is ever used.
