Old fashioned apple variety?

Hi, I am hoping somebody can help me with the name of an apple variety that was popular when I was a child (1970's). It was a very small, hard fruit with a dark red, almost black skin. Quite a tart flavour I think. Everybody used to buy them by the crate around here. I would love to get a tree for my garden, if anyone can suggest a name!? Thanks,
Rachel
