Passionfruit

After my standard purple passionfruit died last year I decided to have a go at one of the yellow panama passionfruit vines. The plant grew like crazy but I only got three fruit. Very dissapointing after being buried in the purple ones in previous years. The taste was also pretty ordinary - not very sweet.

I have just read (QLD DPI website) that these panama varieties usually set fruit better if they cross pollinate. Has anyone had any experience with them? I must admit I am close to pulling it and putting in something more productive.

Also I am interested in growing some other interesting varieties. I have tried banana passionfruit as well as the above ones and they were OK but not great and tended to weediness.

I am very interested in the granadilla, which I think I may have tasted when in Peru, as it was absolutely delicious, juicy and sweet. Anyone know where one could find seed/plants for these or other interestig varieties?

You should try P. ligularis P. antioquiensis and P. antioquiensis they would be the two best tasting somewhat possible to get hold of seeds/plants aside from P. Edulis. The only bad thing is that you need to be some kind of master gardener to get either of them to grow properly : ). I've been strunggling with antioquiensis for years! and only recently starting to get hold of it. I failed first time around with ligularis but I'll have another go one day, it has very pretty heart shaped leaves

Nicefrog,

both of these sound very interesting. Any ideas on where i can obtain seed? I have done a quick google search but not found a source so far.

Thanks,

I think Daleys nursery sells ligularis, and nestlebrae exotics in NZ should have seed of antioquiensis and maybe ligularis too

I think you should find ligularis seed fairly easily on ebay, you might have to pay a few bucks and order them from the states but you will find them, they were ok to import last time I got some but that was years ago so you better check again.

You can see pictures of most passiflora here
