Patio Prize Tomatoes?

| Does anyone know if you can still get Patio Prize tomatoes?
I used to grow these years ago but haven't seen any around the last few years.
They are ideal for growing in containers, being short and thick stemmed. The fruit is the size of a large apricot or small peach, heavy bearers, juicy and full of flavour. They may be a hybrid as I haven't seen any on seed lists.
I have never had a problem growing these, required no special treatment, and found them a good size for the kids to eat. The only other tomato I don't have any problems with are Romas (or cherries) but I'm sick of growing them and want a change.
I would love to grow them again so if anyone knows where I can get them could they let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'v e seen them for sale in Sydney and I grew Patio last year but, IMHO, there are w-a-y better tomatoes out there albeit few with the compact nature of Patios. http://www.oasisaustralia.com/catalog/prodlabela_2726.html Oasis stockists are many. You could contact them for your nearest.

I bought a punnet of First Prize recently and while googleing to find out their size I came across this ( read below ) First Prize is an F1 hybrid determinate, recently marketed as Patio Prize, that makes a 0.5 metre bush and grows into a sturdy container specimen that sets prolific trusses of globular 2-4cm fruits in the mid to late season. In a well watered garden they are prone to fungal diseases, which is why the Super Prize has been bred to overcome that short fall. Available to home gardeners as seedlings in punnets. Same tomato different name ???....MM

Thanks for that. I have grown first prize before and it never seemed to do as well and grew bigger. Must have been different growing conditions. I used to move around a lot. I never had a problem growing patio prize and everyone used to rave over the flavour ( I used to get so many I gave heaps away). I have tried several other (heirloom as well as hybrids) varieties over the years but none have been something to rave over and seem to have one problem or another. The only ones that seem to grow well here are Romas and cherries but both need staking. I never have a lot of time to spend in the garden so don't like to spend my time tying plants up, spraying (prefer organic), etc. I'll just have to keep trying other varieties. Cheers G

A couple of good, compact tomatoes, IMHO, are Scoresby Dwarf/KY1, an Australian heritage variety, and Silvery Fir Tree, a Russian heirloom and very pretty plant. Seeds for both of these are available from Eden Seeds.

Patio Prize was on sale at our local 'Big Green Shed' this morning. I was interested to read your comments as I was in two minds as to whether to pick up one to try. Still not sure :) Cathy

They also had seedlings of PP by Oasis at kmart yesterday. They were already about 10 inches high. $1.95. each

Thanks guys, unfortunately we don't have a kmart and bunnings here but if they sell them there they should be available at Coles or one of the nurseries here. Oasis is generally available at the nurseries.

I purchased one of these plants just yesterday at a local nursery named Osuna Nursery. Have any of you grown these before? This is my first one. Do you have any other (better) suggestions for good container grown tomatoes? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I have grown Patio Prize for about 10 years - keep some of the seeds each year as you can't buy seeds here. Sping here in Australia so only have seedlings. I can save more seeds and send to you after they fruit ednahughes@hotmail.com |
