Hi Elfi,
Can you describe the leaves (shape, size and colour) type of bark perhaps.
The only nuts I can think of off hand that originate in Sth america are;
Brazil nut.........Bertholletia excelsa
Cashew.............Anacardium occidentale
Hickory(pecan).....Carya sp.(most come from Nth. America)
Babussa nut........Orbignya phalerata (which is a palm)
Cheers,
Dee.

Don't know anything about this but a quick google search found the Malabar chestnut, which comes from Northern South America and Central America it is also called the provision tree. Its scientific name is Pachira aquatica. There's more info and pictures at http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/malabar_chestnut.htm
Does this look like your tree?
Hope this helps.

I've seen this growing in Southern Mexico wild. It had leaves like a Mango tree, is that it? the fruit is like a Giant Walnut kind of thing with a big Avocadoish seed inside. The native kids were calling it "The nut tree"

Thanks to Dee_Jay!!! This is exactly what I was looking for, that's the tree. And now I know too why it looks a little sickly, didn't get enough water.
I also didn't realise it has such interesting flowers.
Thanks again for your help.

RE: Provision Nut

It was growing in a stream where I saw it in Mexico, (not beside the stream but right in the water in the middle of the stream)
