Muscatel pips

| Does anyone have any ideas how to remove the pips from muscatel grapes when/before/after drying them? Some wonderful magic machine?
My method is to half dry the grapes then squeeze the pips out. This is really really time-consuming, and it's hard to get rid of all the pips. I actually don't mind the pips too much but hubby doesn't like them and spits them all out; OK for occasional muscatels, but I want to use lots in the muesli instead of buying sultanas (our sultana grape vine wasn't successful).
Help please! Helen |

When I dried muscatels the pips weren't a problem. The dehydrating process made the pips almost undetectable. Have you tried drying any without taking the pips out half way through? That seems like a lot of work and I'd be tempted to eat every second one I removed the pips from, thereby greatly reducing the amount of raisins at the end. |

| Dee Jay, To me the pips are a pleasant crunch but hubby Lance spits them all out. They have up to 1/2 doz pips in each one, but more often one or two. The small pips are fine, but they are often quite large. How do you use your muscatels? |

| I dry about 10kg of muscatels each year and haven't found a good way to de pip them.I leave the pips in and put a warning on the label if I am going to donate a jar to a stall.I use them mainly for chutneys and cakes, sauces and pickles. There is a cherry pipper available maybe that would work with grapes too? |

| I just eat them as a snack. I obtained my muscatels from a friend who owns a vineyard and he told me that he dried them with the pips in. I was surprised because as you say they are a very pippy grape (both in number and size). After drying I found he was right the pips had shrunk and weren't a real problem, unlike before drying. Looking at a packet of bought raisins it states that they are de-seeded. Not sure how they do it. Hopefully, someone will have an answer for you. |

| Paradisi, What a magnificent-looking machine! How on earth did you find the picture? I've searched and searched but not come up with anything! It almost looks like an antique sewing machine, torturing the poor little grapes with the pricks of 100 needles at once. I wonder if it works! Did it come with any text? Helen |
