What is English Marrow?

| We have new neighbours from WA who are keen gardeners and have been romping through ours for local information. They are English and she asked me if I could get English Marrow seed but I don't seem able, at least not under that name. I remember as a child my Mum cooked it and it was foul as a veggie, but she also used to make marrow jam with ginger in it and I loved it. Any ideas where I might obtain some seed or whether it masquerades under another name?

Marrows are backyard grown and rarely see the seed catalogues. Their best bet would be to get some from friends or, at worst, import some from the UK. Marrow seeds are still allowed imports. But they should hurry. AQIS could change their minds overnight! The Henry Doubleday Research Association's seed company, The Organic Gardening Catalogue (google that), has a good selection of marrows.
Of course, they could always just grow zukes and let them get a little big. Same thing really! |

| I always thought it was just called marrow. Mydad also used to grow it, but it was just squash grown really big, and you're right. I't's disgusting as a veg. Like thick water without the flavour !!Mum used to stuff it with meat and onions, and I could eat it that way. |

| New Gippsland Seeds have a marrow in their catalogue called Long White Bush which is "a true marrow on a compact non-running bush. Fruit white to around 40cm at maturity". Rather tasteless vege, except when stuffed with a LOT of garlic, onions etc, etc...

I also suffered marrow as a child in the UK, I tried to feed an oversized zuke to my kids. They were not impressed, even though it was stuffed with a really tasty filling!
Perhaps you could gently explain to them that there are lots more interesting things to grow in Australia! |

| Linda, I might still have some seeds for Aztec Marrow around here. I only got them cause I liked the name, not knowing what they really were. Until I asked on this forum and everybody told me it was just a big fat zucchini. And it is. But quite alright if you put it in a curry. 'Twas pretty in the patch, too. Green with thin white lines. Would you like some of those seeds for your neighbours, if I still have some? I am definitely not growing it again. There are far better things to occupy that space with good soil. :) |

| Thanks for all the responses - that link is a hoot! There's nothing like a good pommie eccentric to make my day..... Thanks Solanum I think I'll tell her to let her zukes grow big. It seems less stress also I'm not sure if she's a Catholic. I wonder if there were some nails sticking out of his kitchen table - a Marrow that weight wouldn't like that. I also once fed a stuffed one to my kids - ( though not as big as the one on his kitchen table though where his milkman comes to visit ). They threatened to have me arrested then started packing. Unfortunately they decided to stay. Now I let one grow every year ( zuke, not kids) just to give to them to stuff themselves for their kids. They generally tell me to stuff it and I put it in the compost. How rude these young ones are! Anyway - thanks for the laugh. I'll now save a big zuke for my neighbour. Cheers

| Children are such ingrates. I toted up my son's bill on his 18th birthday (everything we'd spent on food, washing etc) but it's now almost 20 years later and he still hasn't paid the bill!!!!!!! |
