Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Posted by Raymondo Armidale, NSW (My Page) on

Yes, I'm back at it again. Late last season when I first mooted this idea, several of you kindly offered to help me out. Some of you already have seeds. But I'm afraid, what with the move, I've lost my list of others who offered. So, if you don't have seeds from me but are still willing to participate, would you send me an email?
For those of you who don't know, I'm trying to grow out as many old Australian tomato varieties as I can lay my hands on to build up seed stock. Some are still commercially available so I won't bother with those, but many aren't.
Any volunteers?

Hi Ray
I think we discussed I'd grow a variety for you. Have you sent me any? I will try one variety you think will do well in Melbourne.

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Thanks Pepino. Seeds (including the caps and chillies) will be on their way next week.

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Hi Ray,

Just a quick update on the Australian Pink seeds you sent.
Planted 8 seeds on the 31 July.
As of today, 7 of 8 have germinated and are developing their first sets of true leaves.
Have you had any luck re the history of AP?

Mark

How did Totora beat me to it? I don't like the sound of any of the leftovers. What can you tell me about College Red and College Globe, Ray? Force feed me one of you must? Any determinates among them? I think not.

Grub, I don't anything about the College series. They're probably indeterminates as that was what Joe Sumeghy, the veggie breeder at the time, was into. Shall I just give you one?

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Yeh, try me on College Cropwell, Globe or Red. The Hawkesbury is just over the hill, much like me, so they should work.

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Droll.....very droll. If you're over the hill, I'm in the next town. College cropwell sounds interesting. I wonder if they crop well?. Or indeed like college?. Perhaps they've been to college, and , on a metaphysical level, they feel the need to crop well. Oh No, a full moon.

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

I'll take any left over college seeds Ray, I'm planning to put the ones I have in soon. We're still getting frosts here. They'll be in pots though as they'll have to move house with me.
I hope you've got adam in a secure place, maybe you should check his medication!
Sarah ;-)

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Hello Ray.
Sorry I have been 'missing in action' these past months. Lost contact with everyone. Hibernating this winter.
I have sown Burnley Metro and Burnley Gem this past week and await their germination, along with the other 33 varieties!
I will keep more in contact now the season is starting.
Cheers
Craig

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Ray, shortly I should be able to send down some seeds for Scoresby Dwarf, Simpson Summer Palace, Bush Whopper and this really nice little patio plant called Zlutakytice with tiny orange nippled fruits. The latter has been a big hit at annual tomato testing festivals here (700 people attending in each of 2 years).

Let me know if you want seeds and, if so, where I should send them now.

Best,
Jennifer

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Ray,
Thanks for the seeds. They arrived at work with all the excellent paperwork :)grub.

Do we get a PhD for this Ray.

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Fantastic work Ray, thanks so much for the seeds, will keep you posted on the progress.

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Tasmanian Blushing Yellow. A great plant. Tall, lots of leaves and fruit. I picked the first tomato today (maybe a day or two early). Not as yellow as I thought it would be.

RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Nice looking fruit spatz. Doesn't seem at all yellow in the pic!

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Ray, picked the first fruit off another plant of TBY and these are yellow. Compare them with the fruit of the other TBY plant. I have a third plant but it's still pretty small and the fruit have just set. Will be interesting to see what colour fruit they'll have.

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Spatz, could I have seeds from just the yellow plant please? The other is an imposter and should be taken henceforth eaten until gone!

 o
RE: Great Aussie Tomato Growout

Will do, Ray. (We've eaten one of the impostors for lunch. Together with Moldovan Green and TBY.)

This is what it looks like when cut:
