| This is fascinating. Really. I'm an onion dud and you're growing them as though they're weeds. Creamgold (Pukekohe)- keeps for > 1 year Wow! Do you think I could grow these in temperate Sydney between tomato crops, that is to say, from about late April to October. Ailsa Craig - big brown globe This same name is attributed to a tomato. Is there something I don't know about thename. Maybe it is the name of a place or something? More the point, what is your favourite onion Lomatia? And have youy seeds :) |

Grub, Ailsa Craig is a small rocky island which guards the entrance to the Firth of Clyde. Looks like a big round rock so maybe there is some structural similiarity to the tomato and the onion? The onion is sown Aug-Sept in Victoria and would probably go in in Aug in NSW. I sow Pukekohe in July-August down here - it is recommended Jun-July in NSW so it may go in now there too. Harvest time is Jan in Victoria. How about I send you a sampler of some varieties and you can run a small trial? Are you still at the 5/23 Manly address? |

| I regret to inform you that there is no Grub at that address. Grub moved to South Australia, recently. He wishes to receive all parcels there. Thank you. |

| Spatz, can I assume that you want some onion seed also? If so, I'll personally post them to you (this time). |

| No, no, Lomatia, please don't worry about it. I have too much to sow this spring. Thank you very much for the offer, though. I might get back to you on that next spring. :) I really like your onion list and I am intrigued as how you manage to grow that many, and what their specific uses are, etc. But more questions on that next time. :) |

| An Onion Flan would be noice, different, unusual. Adam could probably whip[ one up in minutes. Thanks for the geography lessons, John, re: Ailsa Craig is a small rocky island which guards the entrance to the Firth of Clyde. Looks like a big round rock so maybe there is some structural similiarity to the tomato and the onion? I had no idea re the rock but that explains its appearance, for sure. I sent my addy to you. Watch out for the Spatz. She's a sneaky one alright :) |

Lomatia, Thanks for everything. You sound like the allium expert. Would it be too late to sow onion seeds? Can you sow them in seed-raising mix and transplant them as I have done with leeks? Any other tips for germination? I struck out last time when I sowed clumpers shallow in drills, scattered potting mix on top, watered and covered with wet carboard. Sorry to be a pain. Thanks for your encouragment. :)Grub |

| Grub, I'd put them all in (or half of each) and see what happens. At this time of the year it would be best to direct sow them (thinly) and use any thinnings as transplants. The torpedos won't need thinning as they push each other out of the way. Maybe use this year as a test run? |
