Lop the Carrot Tops or Not?

| Hi,
Got two rows of Manchester Table Carrot from Eden Seeds bordering a 3m x 1.5m bed with mescalun or mixed-leaf salad types in the middle. Not such a good idea in retrospect coz you want N feed for greens but not for carrots.
Anyway, the carrot tops are getting big and floppy, falling over the baby lettuce and leafy greens. Would you be able to tell me if the carrots would suffer, put energy into growing leafy tops at the expense of a long tap root, for example, if I cut them back somewhat?
Never grown Manchester Table Carrots before. Has anyone tried this variety?
Thanks in advance,
:)Grub. |

| Grub, nice and sweet and without a big core(?) Not that tapered like Western Red is. In Melbourne the carrots, being biennials, would run to seed soon. |

| Not sure about that Grub, I think the problem with feeding carrots is the roots forking, maybe forcing them to grow more leaves would get them to use the excess N? |

| Sound like the carrots are going to be delicious. Thanks Lomatia. I pulled a few this morning and they are still tiny but they are nice and long and not forked. Hoepfully they don't run to seed before filling out. Maybe I have sown them in the wrong season? But Sydney's weather so messed up I don't think the carrots would know. Sarah, That's an interesting suggestion and I'll run a test. Standby for some rivetting carrot news in the not-too-distant future. The only problem I have had with carrots in the past is eating them before they make the backdoor. |
