Importing seed

hi all

just to let you know that I just lost some seed to AQIS. They were ok to import, but as with the usual seed packets they did not have the botanical name on them. My choice was send in $42.50 to have them sent back to the US or have them destroyed.

When I have had this problem before I was allowed to supply the botanical name and then they let them in.

What a bother!

That's a real shame Helen. Hopefully they didn't cost too much.

I find that a lot of places who regularly export have no idea how to export. We recently got some goods in from China and a standard practice is to include a numerical link (invoice number/order number etc) on all documentation. Needless to say they didn't. They then have to re-issue fumigation certificates etc WITH the numerical link and you can imagine the time wasted and port costs associated with this. Sometimes it is better to deal with the same company continuously, because if they can do it the right way first time, you generally never have trouble.

RE: Importing seed

Hi Helen,
I've had the same thing happen even though I badger the suppliers to put botanical names on packets. Sometimes it just doesn't happen.
I've also had seeds confiscated that were correctly labelled. The checker (it's subcontracted by AQIS to Australia Post) didn't understand AQIS rules. I got them after ringing AQIS direct. They've always been very reasonable, if frustrating.

RE: Importing seed

I imported some Corydalis seed - an allowed import but they were held and I filled out a risk analysis. Got a call after a while from AQIS asking me why I did the risk analysis. Apparently the seed should have been immediately cleared on arrival but the sub-contractors stuffed up. The regulations are quite clear and I always check the AQIS webpage. It is doubtful now they will germinate. (I'm not sure they kept them under refrigeration)
