American Paw Paw

Hi All

I have successfully grown one Asiminia triloba seed to a small plant. I was hoping to get some seeds this year and try my luck, however, the seed source doesnt have any available. Does anyone know where I can get some seed or a small plant? The usual seed websites in the US dont have any either.

Thanks

Helen

Can you buy the fruit?

RE: American Paw Paw

Helen,
If you have no luck maybe a friendly American who grows them would have some seeds.
PS Are you doing/have you done any winter sowing? I'm going to try my luck but we've been having -12°C frosts so I'm concerned they'll simply freeze solid then collapse as they thaw.

Fluff,
I haven't seen the fruit on sale anywhere, not that I'd know as I've never seen it in the flesh as it were, only photos.

from what i have seen the north usa pawpaw is generally not seen anywhere or grown anywhere else but in the northern usa.

southern usa grow the papaya yellow pawpaw, seen gardeners there reffering to the yellow as a pawpaw.

so guess going onto the garden or fruit growing g/w forums could be the way to go to get seed?

check with aqis in aus' first maybe or at least have the sender include the botanical name and the common name on the declaration.

Helen, I have plenty of seed that you are welcome to. Failing that I think I still have the contact details of a place in the US that can supply fresher seed.
Or Perry's in SA have seedlings for sale and they post bare rooted.

Grant,
Thanks for the info about Perry's. Always good to find another source for fruit trees.

Hi Grant

Thanks for your offer. Could I get half a dozen or so off you, please. Great to know about Perry's as well, in case all else fails. Could you email me your details, so that I can get a SSAE to you. Is any seed etc that you would like in exchange?

regards

Helen

Sure, you can have what's left plus the planting instructions. Just email your address. Do you want any seeds Ray?
Perry's sell the seedlings for $25 each. You need two as they need to be cross pollinated. Postage for two within SA is also $25. They are working on grafted varieties.
Pawpaw is a very hardy tree and the fruit have a unique blend of flavours, including banana and pineapple, and are very sweet.
My email is gwi31567@bigpond.net.au

Would they grow in Brisbane, or are the more of a cold weather variety?

 o
RE: American Paw Paw

I would say they would be worth a try in Brisbane. They are a marginal sub tropical plant but they require a brief period of cool weather. They will tolerate very cold weather. I don't think they would fruit much further North than Brisbane though. I may be wrong, If I lived further North I would put them in:)

And here I was thinking that any Paw Paw was way too tropical for our climate. Thanks for that info! :)

RE: American Paw Paw

There is that confusion with Papaya and Pawpaw that has been mentioned before. that's why it's confusing to call Papaya (Carica papaya) Pawpaw (Asimina triloba). Mexican's don't call Papaya Pawpaw, only us ignorant Westeners:). Yes Spatz, Papaya is tropical. You can grow it from supermarket seed in a sheltered warm, location in SA. It's easy to grow as well but will rot in winter if the soil gets too cold and wet. I prefer the red variety.

Hi there, you probably have your pawpaws now, however for future reference or for others you can buy plants from Yamina Rare Plants in Monbulk Vic. Their website is www.yaminarareplants.com.au.
All the best!

Helen,

I'll be watching your progress with the paw paw with interest! Ta for the chillies. I'll be off for a few weeks from next week avoiding the rain - 80 ml this weekend!
