AQIS warning

If you are planning to import any seeds from O/S you MUST ensure that the botanical name is visible. Have had some Basil, Onions and Tomatoes knocked back for breaching that rule. Funny thing was they all had a ruddy big colour picture of the vegetable on the packet and were all heat sealed.
Seems a bit haphazard though because some seed in another delivery w/o the botanical name has been inspected and allowed through. Not worth the risk so try and get the supplier to write the name on. (I have to get from the suppliers a letter/fax on a letterhead and signed to confirm that the bot names I gave to AQIS are correct!!! - we are not talking about anything dodgy or prohibited here, just the letter of the law) |

| Lomatia, are those the seeds you ordered from TGS? I ordered from them last week and did mention to write the botanical name hopefully they'll do it. Did you sort the things out? |

No Lyne, these were from Harvest Moon who did in fact fill out my faxed receipt with the bot names and refaxed it so it's up to AQIS to accept that and release the seeds. Totora two received parcels on the same day - first from TGS opened by AQIS and allowed through even w/o bot names, the other from HM where those w/o bot names were seized so I arranged a fax from HM for him. My TGS order some weeks ago (big parcel) came in apparently uninspected. My worry now is the small order from Marriana's with toms and eggs will be opened and siezed. Emailed her quickly but she had posted it the day befor w/o bot names so another fax in the pipeline!!! I'm sure that your order will be OK. Apparently all you need is the bot name somewhere in the parcel. |

| You want a hear a funny story. Earlier this year I ordered seeds from Canada mentioning that I would like the botanical name indicated on the seeds packet. They labelled most of them and on some of them they wrote : I don't know check on the internet! lol! I don't think they understood why I was asking them to do that. I still received them no probs. |

AQIS can be fickle. I had a fun time with them when I came back through customs. I declared everything of coure (*winks*) and they painstakingly went through each packet, I had 20 or so, checking them on their database. Without the botanical name, they are incapable of checking and will not look them up. It's just laziness, in my opinion. Even with the botanical name, they actually don't really understand what they're looking at. They took my carrot seeds because there's a weed with an almost identical botanical name. I didn't want to make a fuss so I let it go. And how come we don't see you guys over at the Ausgarden forum? |

| Ray, I've just registered. When do the pop-ups start? Must tell Totora about it too. |

| g'day lomatia, don't think you'll ever get popups in the ausgarden forum, the person running it isn't there to rake money like this crowd is. maybe the way costs are going with band width etc.,. us gardeners may have to look at some sort of contribution on an annual basis?? not sure? we are on a limited income so extra costs hit hard, so maybe something where those that can afford something pay and concessions for others?? dunno? just thinking out loud here, but with the old management here this place wasn't too bad then it all went pear shaped with the need for greed hey? len |
