Green manure

I am thinking of planting some green manure, probably barley, because it is supposed to aid the uptake of phosphorous in tomato plants. Will it germinate at this time of year just north of Melbourne? or does anybody have other views regarding this subject?

Yes it will but will it grow enough by tomato time. It should be dug in as the flower heads are forming I think.

I'm about to put a thick sowing of wheat/sunflowers in for green manure - expect it to be diggable by early October just in time for some tomatoes to go in later in the month. Conditions in Tas are coming into the spring rains so if you also get rain in August/September, its as well to sow down now and give them a start before they get too wet then it will shoot and grow as the ground warms up in September. I'd dig it in before it gets a chance to seed - otherwise you defeat the objective. I bought my wheat in the healthfood shop - bulk buy very cheap. Cosmic
