Does anyone know where I can get starter kits for mushrooms here in WA? I'd like to grow something other than standard buttons....Thanks!

Hi Nicki,

I've bought a couple of kits from Bunnings recently. They had standard button mushrooms and portabello. Also seen them at Waldecks, but they were a bit pricier. If you're looking for something more exotic I spoke to a guy who sells oyster mushroom kits at the Kalamunda markets the other day. He said he sets up shop at the Guildford markets too. Noticed that you're from the Southwest tho, so I don't know if this Perth-centric info is any help to you, but hope it is helpful in some way.

Hi Nicki

I used to work with a guy in CALM that used mushroom innoculum on hay bales. He grew many sorts of mushrooms. If you could source the innoculum, it would be cheaper to sent to you down south than a whole mushroom kit.
Where is Wisconsin in WA? I used to spend alot of time in the southwest bushwalking and for my Honours degree.

Helen

Hi Nicki

Have you found anywhere that supply mushroom spores. I thought it would be easy to find on the internet. But I can only find mushroom kits that would be expensive to transport. It would be lovely to grow your own morels! Which we could do if we lived in the US where they have a number of mushroom varieties that are available as kits

Hi Mercury 12
I bought a kit from darling downs mushrooms last year. No success at all and I wrote to them and didn't even receive a reply..never again. The box I previously got, same brand two years before did quite well.

I posted some information on growing shiitake and oyster mushrooms indoors that also has links to places that carry all kinds of different spores. I hope it might help some.

Here is a link that might be useful: Growing Shiitake and Oyster Mushrooms
