Composting help

Posted by blackcat2 NSW Aust (My Page) on

So I've started up my compost bin again, after numerous unsuccessful tries. The thing is I still just don't get it. I've got a good mix of browns and greens but am not sure when to mix/airate. My kitchen scraps smell quite rotten if I try to mix. Am I mixing too soon??

Is there a step by step thread for Idiots??? LOL

Cheers,
L

RE: Composting help

not sure i can help L, and this reply may be too late?

these forums are so quiet for me i visit maybe once a week.

anyhow not sure what sort of bin you have but if you can introduce oxygen into the middle that should help with the smell issue from rotting kitchen scraps.

as i understand (and why i no longer use compost heaps/bins) compost should be turned daily. now kitchen scraps are better dealt with in a worm farm.

for us we cut out the middle man all that extra work and the expense of bins etc.,. and all our composting happens in teh vege' agrdens right where the benfits are needed, and no smell.

RE: Composting help

Thanks Len. A worm farm sounds interesting. I think the kids would enjoy it too :D I might look into it as I don't think I'm going to be able to successfully manage the black compost bin that I have :D. One day I might get my three composting bays LOL! When we get more space :D

Thanks!
L
