Used veg plot as litter tray

| Yesterday I discovered that some animal not sure if it is cat or dog has used my newly prepared veg plot as a litter tray. The potatoes I planted in there haven't sent up shoots yet I know dog or cat faeces can't be composted and used on the veg garden for risk of contaminating the veg. I removed what I could see and I put a mesh on top to try to discourage the animal, I just wondered will my veg be contaminated?

My kids & I have had years of this & survived, I always compost the dog poo, no ill affects so far. Any contamination will be on the surface, not absorbed into the plant so thorough washing should remove them. If you are immuno suppressed or pregnant then it may be a problem but otherwise the human race has coped with this for many thousands of years :-) |

| Yeah, I heard that cat poo can have a very toxic effect on pregnant women, though I can't remember the name of the pathogen involved. This info would be enough to make me quite cautious, and vigilant in trying to get the creature to change its habits. In terms of our co-evolution with felines etc, we have probably altered any natural immunity to many pathogens by our use of antibiotics and improved (obsessive?) hygiene. mudlark |

| shelley, do you have possums in your area? it could be possum poo especially if it happened overnight when possums are out and about I feel the same way as sarahmay, unless youre pregnant and you handle the poo and eat something afterwards without thouroughly washing your hands, it's very unlikely youll get sick. or if vegies come in contact with the poo, and you dont wash them or cook them before you eat them. |

| Thank you to the three of you for replying to my query. As I am not pregnant I won't worry just wash the veg and my hands. We dont have possums near here trancegemini so I a pretty sure it is a cat or dog. The mesh seems to be a bit of a deterrent for now so hopefully the animal is going elsewhere. Thanks again.
