Peas 'n' Corn in Nth Qld

| Hi to all the cornucopian's, I mostly hang out at the tropical and australian forums, but call in here from time to time.
my partner has asked me to grow sweetcorn and sugarsnap peas, he has even bought me the seedlings.
is there anything inparticular that these need?
West facing garden bed with very sandy soil, improved with manure, organic matter and dynamic lifter then mulched on top with pangola.
I need to know fertiliser and ph preferances, pest control and good ideas for cheap trellis.
any help would be most appreciated.

start the corn off first then plant the peas, might be a bit late for sugarsnap peas up there and seedlings aren't much chop anyway. get some nice beans and grow them using corn as the trellis

Both peas and corn aren't that great as transplants. They should be sown where they are to grow. This said, be very careful not to disturb their roots too much when you do put them in. NSW Agriculture has a great article on the growing of corn http://www.agric.nsw.gov.au/reader/veg-grow/7907 The way I currently do my corn (in the ACT, in mid to late spring, as frost kills corn). Take corn and plant in a block of minimum 20 plants (cover with softdrink bottles if frost is still around). Surface sow letuce seed lightly around the same block (you may need to moisten lettuce seed and put in the fridge for 5 days to initiate germination if temps are above 20 oc). Wait a couple of months and plant peas into same block. This provides my mid summer lettuce, as the summer hots up the corn shields the lettuce from the heat keeping the lettuce from bolting and getting bitter. As the corn is being harvested in late summer the early autumn pea crop is just coming onto the vines. When this is finished around anzac day I dig the whole lot in and plant bush peas or a coriander/rocket mix for overwintering as a green manure/winter salad crop. As all can tell, I'm bored and can't wait till spring is here again. We've just had a week in Canberra where my pots froze solid for three days. It killed a lot of my more marginal plants and even the ones I had on the 10watt heating mat got frozen. I'm still waiting to see how the citrus will pull through. The extremes of OZ weather always amaze me! Cheers Karl

Hi guys, I like the idea of using the corn as the trellis, you really can't get cheaper and easier than that! As for the crowding the corn with other veg I think I might do that too. Have some coriander and basil here might try some asian greens or something like that. Thanks again folks but don't stop there keep all the good info coming. Ree

Peas will transplant fairly easily with basic care. I transplanted about 150 seedlings at the end of February with few failures. In fact, with the temps now hitting the high 20s, the peas are just finishing.
