Taro in Central Vic?

Posted by shepparton Centr Vic Austr (My Page) on

Tried planting a root taro this year. Variety with a purple dot where the stalk is attached to leaf.
Well watered but under a tree, so part shade in summer. It grew like topsy, plenty of leaves to 5 foot high and then had lots of little babies round it. Decided to dig it up hoping for a giant sized taro but guess what? All leaves no big taro.......Just lots of little cormels.

Is it too cold for taro here? More sunshine? Anyone grow taro this far south?

RE: Taro in Central Vic?

Hello Shepparton,
Taro has been grown successfully in Melbourne and ther Strathbogie Ranges south of you, higher and cooler, i'ts a selection of the right varieties that seems to make a big difference. Some of the stuff grown may have only been grown for its leaves, some may be poisoness.
