Where Can I Get Molasses from?

Does anyone know where I can get molasses from? The couple of supermarkets I've tried haven't stocked it. Are there other names? Are there any other alternatives? I.e. can I use Golden Treacle?

Chris, have you tried health stores? I'm sure that you will find it there, blackstrap molasses in particular. However, if it is for other than health purposes you could certainly substitute treacle or golden syrup in cooking.

I have the same difficulty in finding liquid glucose. Some supermarkets have it as well as some chemists but it is much dearer from them. Fortunately, I know of a couple of health food stores that sell it.

I also assumed that you did not want to buy it in bulk for stock feeding.

I bought molasses in Coles supermarket a while back. It was in the health food section.

My local health food shop sells it in jars or in bulk, but as Len has already mentioned an even cheaper place would be a place that sells fodder, here the local saddlery shop sells it - its mixed with chaff and fed to horses as a supplement.

cheers, mudlark

Both molasses and glucose can be found at good homebrew shops. molasses is used for making rum, glucose is used to make liquers. Just make sure the shop sells spirit supplies not just beer kits.
P.S. Be careful, you may find another all consuming hobby. If you enjoy cooking you'll enjoy brewing.

I believe its a great compost accelerator, but since we tend to be able to pick up stable manure pretty easily we haven't needed to use it for a while. Thanks for the tip on the livestock/produce stores Len, I hadn't realised we might find it there, I might grab some anyway.

Gardening and farmers Co-ops sell it bulk for somewhere's around the .50 cents a litre..
Like len sez, works out a tad cheaper ey:)...

Every produce store should stock molasses (for horses). It could be an expensive option to purchase it from health food stores or even supermarkets. Depending on what you wanted to use it for, I figure if it's fit enough for the horses to eat, it should be safe enough.

Yep, have now found the stuff from supermarkets- but is not cheap! I will just need to find a produce store nearby! Thanks for all the advice!
Seems to be doing a reasonable job at preventing the catterpillars! Still need to be quite vigilant with the brocilli- ie. getting out there every morning and inspecting under each leaf, scraping off the eggs and small bugs!
Love the smell of the molasses from the vegie patch, though!

At my produce store you take in a container and they fill it up with molasses, lovely stuff. Some farmers spray it over whole paddocks because it gets the microbes buzzing. Sugar water works on compost heaps too to build microbial activity quickly and it is cheap. Cheers Max
