Hi everyone

I was wondering what varieties of potatoes everyone grew and if there was anyone with some unusual ones.

Hi Helen
I always grow pink eyes and nicola (sometimes called dutch cream). Most years I grow kennebecs, pontiacs, bismarks and up-to-dates. All my spuds are grown under straw between rows of straw bales about 18 inches apart. These bales are then pulled apart for next years crop. The pink eyes are the first because they are used from about one inch in diameter.I don't usually grow rare varieties because often they are rare for very good reasons. The kids are all at school so I can't show you any pictures.

I grow Nicola, Dutch Cream and King Edwards. These seem to suit the climate. I think because of the restrictions that apply to potatoes in Tas, it's hard to get anything heritage but worth trying the Fork in the Road for supplies next month-ish. We were down your way last week. Staying in Home Ave.

Hi Helen, we grew Kippflers, Dutch Cream/Nicola (are they the same?), Viking, Sapphire, Toolangi Delight and one or two others. It was whatever was on offer from Diggers.
If you have restrictions but are still keen to try different varieties, create your own. Just leave some plants go to seed and grow the seeds. Spuds so grown are often different from the parent. They may be better, the same or worse. No way of knowing. It might be fun though.

Hi all

I was curious because I read that the permaculture group in Victoria have 133 varieties

We grew Royal Blue and Dutch Cream (which *are* different to Nicola they are even a different shape) last year. The Royal Blue were very prolific under straw. the Dutch Cream less so.

Trying to decide at the moment what to plant as we just got the diggers catalogue. Some of the new varieties look pretty interesting and I wish we had room for the 48 assorted tubers in the combo offer, but I think 20 or so will be our limit. We don't make chips, but I do like to make baked/roast (what IS the difference LOL) wedges and yellow-fleshed spuds seem to make the nicest ones.

I like the look of the Brownell, which comes originally from Adirondack and keeps up to 4 months. Kipfler are always hard to go past and their yield is fairly good. I was astounded by Purple Congo which they said got 2.73kg per 100g seed in 2005! According to Diggers, pink eye is a high yielder so that's also a possibility... decisions, decisions !

Here is a link that might be useful: Royal Blue & Dutch Cream
