light bulb confusion!

Okay, so after reading some extremely long discussions on sister US site I'm even more confused than before. A normal white bulb that they said was okay to use rather than fancy... is just a globe off the shelf that I might put in my lamp?
Just killed all my little germinated seeds by watering too much! darn it. I have too much love to give. Now it's a little cooler- was thinking I might try a lamp. What about the fan business. good idea?

I've never used a fan, flowr. There's a theory that movement of the seedlings will stimulate growth. Some people brush the seedlings lightly with their hand once a day. I've never done that either, and I've had very few seedling failures. It's one of those typical personal preferences.

Any light will do. On the odd occasion when I've used a light, I've used my desk lamp with a traditional bulb. Fluoros are probably more efficient for the simple reason that they're longer and, if you've got batch of seedlings, they throw a greater area of light. But if you're using lights, remember to keep the light right down low, no more than a couple of inches above the seedlings. The seedlings won't burn. As the seedlings grow, gradually lift the light, always keeping it just above the seedlings.

thanks finbar. My new little seeds have started germinating. Have put them near a closed window-I'm paranoid about too wet/too dry- but will err on the too dry side this time I think! Good seedies goooo!

Plenty of light is the go, flowr. Where in NSW are you? If you're in Sydney, you can put them outside during the day providing there isn't too much penetrating sun. The temperatures are ideal.

Yup here in big smoke. After the March Baby-Seedling-Masacre on my terrace I'm keeping them inside. But they have a lovely window spot where they're getting sun nearly all day. Sprouting Broccoli, Mesculun Mix and a few flame lettuce are surviving this round. I've put my 5-coloured silverbeet in the fridge as packet suggested and nothing yet.. My stringless Celery is actually still alive as from previous mentioned sad event- but they're coy and spindley. Verbena things have not come up yet... just to give you the complete picture.
