Young apricot tree looking poorly

Hello,

We bought and planted a Moorpark apricot tree in our garden a couple of years ago, and have been looking after it carefully. Possums were loving the young leaves, so we even built a netted frame to put over it to keep them out! We have been fertilising (once a year with slow release), mulching and watering. It is in a sunny position, and the net blocks much of the wind.

This year, the leaves all fell off about a month before any of our other fruit trees started to lose theirs (or even turn brown). Does anyone know if we have a problem on our hands? Have we killed it with kindness? Will it bounce back?

Any assistance / suggestions much appreciated,
Sally.

I'm not familiar with this particular variety and, therefore, not sure if this is normal. To check if it is still alive you can snap a twig from the top of the tree and if it is still green inside it should be fine. If not then scratch the bark further down to see if it is green.

Fingers crossed!
