Nitrogen Nodules.

In another post I asked about the nitrogen fixing on bean roots because I heard that Australian soil doesn't have the right properties for this to occur.

Raymondo very kindly replied " It's a bacterium that's missing, one of the rhizobium group, often unique to each leguminous plant. If you want them there you usually need to innoculate the seed before sowing. Green Harvest in Q'ld offers the innoculant with each packet, but it's optional. When you pull out the beans, roots and all, and if there are whitish nodules on the roots then the bacteria were present. I usually just pull out a few and if present, just cut the rest off at the base leaving the roots in the soil."

I've pulled up a couple of beans and found little balls on the roots. Very exciting ! I've chucked a picture up and would appreciate knowing if these are the things I'm looking for!

Here is a link that might be useful: Nodules?

Hi Linda

Your bean nodules look just like a picture out of a plant physiology book. Congratulations!

RE: Nitrogen Nodules.

Hello Linda,
If the nitrogen fixation is working well then the nodules are reasonably largish (near match head size)and pinky-red inside. They also should tend towards being in clumps at the base of the plant. If they are white, smallish and distributed randomly throughout the roots then it is likely that you don't have a good strain of bacteria in the soil.

Agree with all of what Ray has said and the bacteria specific to each legume can be bought quite cheaply from a mob called (I think it is from memory have the details on my lap top) Biocare in NSW.
