 o
beetroot question

Hi all, I am very new to beetroot growing (have not grown root crops before) and am possibly going to ask a very dumb question, but...

how do you know when the beetroots have reached an adequate size? Do you have to scrape away some of the soil around them to check? Do the leaves start to die down? Have not been able to find much on this exact topic. TIA

If the tops aren't peeking out of the ground - giving you an idea of the size - you can poke a finger down into the soil. Depending on the variety, smaller is usually nicer!

You will see them coming up the tops are very visible as they grow,
And they taste so much nicer home grown, Good luck with your first root crop.
Cheers...MM.

I generally sow the seeds reasonably close together ( about 3 inches) so that I can pick really little baby ones as I 'thin' them out. The stems thickening at the base will generally indicate the size but they do poke out a bit. Don;t plant too deeply. I'm growing 4 different varieties this year - so healthy! One of he most rewarding veges I reckon. Eat the tender leaves too.

The tops make a delicious salad. Separate the leaves from the stems. Boil or steam the stems for five or six minutes, depending how crunchy you like them. Add the leaves for the last couple of minutes of the cooking. Drain, shake off most of the moisture. While still warm, toss with EVOO and some lemon juice or nice wine vinegar and season well. Yum!

RE: beetroot question

Ditto Finbar!

Silverbeet is actually a non-rooting species of beetroot.
I also steam leaves from broccoli and turnips (both growing superbly now)...delish, and the main plant continues to grow....

Regards,

Shax
