Carrots - when are they going to seed?

Posted by coward (My Page) on

I planted my carrots in about November 07, have just pulled one out. Here's a picture:

Does this mean its gone to seed, or was it still growing? What should I look for? Is the thing in the middle the 'going to seed' bit?

Any feedback gratefully received.

RE: Carrots - when are they going to seed?

Hi Coward,

Carrots are biennial plants which means that they grow in the first year and then go to seed in the second year. You will not mistake when they go to seed as they have a very large seed head. If you're wondering when to harvest carrots then you can usually do this whenever they are big enough for you. Often carrots older than one season will be woody, cracked and attacked by a range of pests.

Hope this helps.
