Gooseberries in South Australia?????

Hi Everyone,
Hope someone can help me out here :-)
Can gooseberries be grown in South australia? and if so where can I buy some bushes or canes?
I have not had gooseberries for years (can get them here but expensive) would lke to grow some.

| Gill, I guess you could grow them if you were in the Adelaide Hills (or Tasmania). They need about 800+ hours of chilling and mild summers. If you live in an area without chilling I think you should give them a miss. They are quite similar to Red Currants, for example. Quite a while ago (a few years) I saw them being sold at the Stirling market by one of the plant people there. Not the 2 Dollar plant man. No idea whether they are still available, I haven't checked for a long time. |

| Gill, a market gardener I know in Summertown in the Adelaide Hills grows them, so as Spatz says, if you live up in those colder winter areas you'd probably be able to grow them. You could try Perry's Fruit and Nut nursery in McLaren vale - they seem to sell quite a few berry-type fruits. PP |
