Gigantic local tomato

Thought all you tomato buffs would be interested in a local newspaper article where Sergi Andrijenko of Ringwood East grew a 572g tree tomato in a pot. The circumference of the tomato was about 40cm. He said "It's pretty big, a bit smaller than a cantaloupe and about as big as my hand". He also challenged anyone to find a vegetable as "big and ugly as mine". It apparently looked like no other fruit, with its crackly skin appearing like a map of Tasmania. He said he began growing the tree tomatoes in pots after reading a magazine review of them. He fed them seaweed extract and Charlie Carp. Mr Andrijenko boasted he might need a chainsaw to cut the bread roll! Sergi was photographed paying homage to his tomato with a big kiss. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has beaten Sergi's record.

Halinka,

if it's the one we commonly call Tamarillo, I'd dispute that it's a "true" tomato, although that certainly is a whopper!

I used to grow them in Melbourne, and if that bloke intends to eat it on a bread-roll, he's a better man than I! Very bitter, except the pulp in the centre, which can be scooped out with a spoon and used like passionfruit...

Regards,

Shax

Ozmantis,

Words are certainly unnecessary. What a beauty. Nearly a kilo! Poor old Sergio would be deflated if he saw your contribution. Out of curiosity, is your tomato also a tree tomato and what did you feed it?

Thanks for the info on tree tomatoes, Shax - pity they don't taste as wonderful as they look.

There is a group of true tomatoes that are called "tree tomatoes" or "tree types" - varieties include "New Big Dwarf" and "Golden Dwarf Champion". Patrina's Nort-South project involves these tomatoes.
The tree types, with the exception of "New Big Dwarf", don't produce large fruit.
