no dig gardening timber edging

Posted by hedwig QLD Brisbane (My Page) on

I am creating a new edible garden. And I decided to use the no dig method in order to have more instaneous results.
We've got plenty of old timber fence cladding left over and perhaps it could suit me for the edging (2 of them nailed on an upright).
I heared that timber in the garden would perhaps attract termites to the garden and then to the house. Is this true?
We really do not want to have pest control in our house and termites are in every third garden (said a pest contoller to me).
Or if not timber do you have other suggestions whoch does not take too much space like rocks and is not too expensive?
thanks for ideas and information!

g'day hedwig,

so long as the termites are in the agrden that is fine, if you have created your termite bariers and protection then the house will be fine with regular inspections by you and/or termite fella.

you could use the timber off the fence it should be well seasoned by no particularly if it is hardwood. if it is pine then it is most likely going to be cca treated in which case for me i'd source some other material.

check how we did our first beds on our building a garden page, we sued clip-lok roofing from the demolition yard, easy to use and self supporting coems in 10" wide stripe mostly but have seen 20" wide strips as well.

you could use biscuits of hay to form the edging as well see our hay bale gardens page.

Hi len, the idea of the old roofing is good and easy to get. Perhaps I prefer using the timber which is disturbing in our garden. I think its hardwood however it is green - that means it is treated, but the old fence was at least 15 years old.
I have to find a way to secure it that it stays in place without buying garden stakes (I would need too much and they're not cheap at all 90 cents each)

Hedwig

I have timber garden edges in my vege patch. The timber is hardwood. I moved one the other day, and underneath were lots of termites, munching away. They don't like light, so they all left when I left the timber in the sun.

I think if you already have the timber lying around your yard, then the termites will get into it anyway. I would use it and just monitor whats going on. If they are in your garden bed, they won't be in the house, or so I have been told.

My wooden edges are in place with stakes, I did go and buy a bundle of 6 from bunnings. I guess they are a bit pricey but very convenient, and they last forever.

Happy vege gardening.

Popi
