Perenial Leeks

After some advice on my perennial leeks. Late last year most of them went up to seed and then died right back, but today when i went out to take a look I noticed lots of new sprouts starting, the old plants have huge white bulbs and lots of little baby bulbs forming off the side of each biggy.

My questions are

1. Will new plants grow from the baby bulbs?

2. If so should I seperate the plants out before they begin to grow again? What if I don't?

3. Are these big bulbs edible and if so what do they taste like?

My experience with them is that you can divide off the tiny leeks ( bulbs) that are being produced and plant them out for new leeks. If you just leave them alone they tend to turn into a clump and stay small a bit like chives do and you won't get much from them. I'd suggest you plant them out as soon as they are big enough to handle. Feed them well and plenty water to get them to grow fast and you should have some great leeks for winter. I think they thrive better than those grown from seed.

g'day fin,

yes each one of those little bulblets will grow and yes you can eat the older bulbs, and in some cases the seed from the flowers is viable it would seem especially so down vic' way not up here in the sub-tropics. so spread them about you may never need to buy onions again.
