Invasive Passionvine rootstock. HELP!

I planted several passionfruit vines 5 years ago and now the rootstocks are taking over the garden. No matter how much I pull out it still keeps coming up and is spreading. I reckon this rootstock to which the Nelly Kelly vines were grafted should be declared a knoxious weed in Victoria. Can anybody out there tell how to conquer this awful pest?

hello Hank

I thoroughly agree with you. I have known about this problem for many years. The rootstock of the Nelly Kelly is a menace. In fact passionfruit is a weed that moves into bushland, I believe spread by birds. I have found many passionfruit vines growing in the bush near me.

I would never buy this plant again, and I think it should be removed from the nurseries.

To eradicate your recalcitrant rootstock, perhaps you could try the "scrape and paint" method of killing plants. You could try just neat glyphosate, but I believe that does not work. You may have to try something more lethal.

Good luck with it all.

Haha,
You too.
Scorched earth policy - keep poisoning and weeding til there is not a skerick coming up anymore. You might want to pull up some of the underground runners in the process.
One odd thing I've discovered - horses relish them as a wonderful treat.

if rootstock fruits, seedlings come up alot, but the rootstock is easily dug out?

Look for Sunshine Special Passionfruit. Good cold tolerance and NOT GRAFTED.

Perhaps someone might have some seeds for sale or swap?
