Vertical gardening

A while ago someone mentioned growing pumpkins, etc on a trellis. I found this site about vertical gardening ages ago but then couldn't find it again until today. It is actually to advertise a book but it may give some of you with limited space some ideas. This one may be a bit extreme but could be adapted to suit.

Here is a link that might be useful: Vertical Gardening

Looks like the way to go or should I say grow...GH I wonder if growing the vines like that they will get less mildew here I would love to know. I used to grow pumpkins up when I lived in Melbourne they grew all over the garden fence then up over the chook yard it was all covered over top with chicken wire to keep the foxes out. I only ever grew butternut so they were not very heavy and I had bumper crops.

Its a very interesting website:- Thanks for posting...... Cheers..MM.

Interesting. I grew cucumbers, pumpkins and melons on a trellis this year. I put it in a very bad spot so it didn't get any sun at all until around 11.00am. The melons did very poorly, the pumpkins okay. The cukes didn't seem to mind the lack of sun and are still pumping out fruit.
The pupmkin got very bad powdery mildew (I think the variety is very susceptible) but still managed several nice fruit.
It's a great space saver and I'll do it again with a few changes - better position and lots more manure in the soil.

my luffas need the same growing requirements as pumpkins - except they should be on a trellis to keep the sponge whiter.

My pumpkins occassionally follow the luffas and end up in trees or hanging off a fence - it doesn't hurt them and if you want to keep the acreage that pumpkins use for something else - then trellises are a good idea.

Do your chooks lay special Valentine eggs every year? :)
