I have tremendous yields in Melbourne from that variety. Nice and fleshy and juicy too!

Hi Misty, I grew them for the first time this year.

The Up: Great mid to late season alternative with excellent taste. Apart from a few early ones mine are just into full swing now. When dried, mine had a wonderful smokey flavour! No, I'm not a wine snob, you could actually taste the smoke. I've never encountered that before.

The down: Fruit are bit prone to cracking and, due to the colour, I seem to miss the odd one when picking. They are quite prolific and a few of the branches have succumbed to the weight. But that is more my fault than the plants.

Mine are just coming into production - they are sweet, very juicy but the jury is out for now. I agree they are a bit prone to cracking but they have been a good healthy plant with abundant fruit. They should do well up north and be even darker with the hotter climate. My neighbour tried a few the other day and he loves the flavour. I haven't gotten around to trying them myself yet but I'll try drying them if you reckon they are nice that way Karl. I must say they are attractive.

Thanks so much everyone, when you say prone to cracking do you mean just the skin. You don't mean splitting like as when we used to get these huge Thunderstorms ( I Wish ) and get over 100mm of rain in a day ( What a beautiful Dream ) and then more the next day do you..

Hi Karl I have never tried drying them or anything for that matter and I adore smoked food so the taste sounds great, how do you go about this, have you one of those electric things with the trays, or do you have you own special way to do it would love to know. With just hubby and I to eat them we give so many of my home grown veggies away to neighbours it would be great to keep a bit more of the surplus.....Cheers..MM.

Hi Misty,
Yep the skin is prone to cracking. I don't know of any tomato that would withstand the soaking you describe without cracking! But some varieties are better than others.

In summer (sunny day more than 30 oc) I slice them and place them on old flyscreens. Bring them in at night and after a couple of days you have dried them.

When its cooler than this I use a solar drier (read two polystyrene boccoli boxes with glass tops, one for catching the heat and funneling the heated air into the second one which has the toms). On a 25oc day it easily dries them in a day.

ciao
Karl

Hi there...... And Thanks so much Karl, It is 32 degrees every day now but by time the tomatoes are ready to pick it will certainly be a lot cooler...So we will have a go at your Solar idea, sounds good to me......Cheers....MM.

Mistymorn - a great taster and picked warm from the vine are delicious - if you can keep the tomato grubs out of them, they like them too.
