Can anyone please tell me what size my Queensland Blue Pumpkins should be to be picked, they are about 12 inches accross.

Pick them when the stalk starts to wither, if you can leave a good bit of stalk on that's supposed to help them keep longer.
My Golden Hubbards which have grown all over the back fence have put on another flush of flowers so I'm hoping I may get some more fruit on them.

Like Sarah says, best to pick when the stalk starts to wither. But, if you're not worried about keeping them over a long period, you can pick them almost anytime. Young pumpkin tastes good, it just won't store very well.

Thank you Ray and Sarah, actually I had a pumpkin sitting in the middle of my lawn this arvo, the vine was climbing up the Grevillea, the pumpkin must have snapped off with the weight, had about 2inches of stalk, so will store down under the house.

They should be cured for a week or two before storage I believe. Leave it somewhere dry but exposed to sun - up round my way you see them all along the occasional rooftop curing.

For longevity we pick them after the nearest tendril dries up and on a day with a cool, dry breeze. This helps the cut to quickly heal.

RE: Queensland Blues and Baby Blue

On a recent visit to Melbourne, I picked up some veggie seeds to try in my Garden. SOme of these are Baby Blue Pumpkin seeds, from Goodman seeds in Bairnsdale, Vic. Can you tell me at what size they are best harvested? The package photo looks like they should be picked at about the size of a very large grapefruit. Is that correct?

g'day sarah,

best picked when the vine dies and the fruit is then fully ripe, as has been suggested when the stem of the fruit looks like it is beginning to shrivel, but early picked fruit will not be the same flavour as fully ripened fruit.
