Watercress plant?

My brother just emailed me to see if I could find out something about a plant that his neighbour remembers from her childhood. Going back to her younger days she had "watercress plant" which used to grow to about 300 - 600 mm high, about 300mm in diameter. The leaves were soft and had a fern like appearance, and it grew under a fruit tree.

Not much to go on I'm afraid - my brother wondered if it was Nasturtium, but I wouldn't describe those leaves as "fern like"?

Patrina,
funny you should mention nasturtiums...watercress is in the same family and its Latin name is actually "Nasturtium Officinale".

Can't shed any light on what he may be growing, but here's a start if you want to research...

Regards,

Shax

Here is a link that might be useful: Watercress

Oops!
That site actually says that the ornamental nasturtium is "unrelated", but when I did my Hort. it WAS...maybe taxonomists have changed that (as they frequently do!).

Good Googling!

You're right about the name changing Shax, I'm trying to learn all the names in Hort at the moment, it really doesn't help when you ask the teacher for a name, look it up & it's not there. Then they say oops! well it used to be called that!

Sarah...it'll drive you crazy!
I reckon about 1/3rd of what used to be "Eucalypts" are now something else...and on it goes...

Just keep the text books close at hand and update them annually (or as you can afford!).

Shax

Sounds a bit like a maidenhair fern, PP. Nothing like bona fide watercress. Which I grew with mixed success for a while.
