Todays harvest

Production has slowed but they are still coming in. The pic shows from top left Black Krims and PL Polish, next row, Akers West Virginia, one Big Boy and a couple of small Brandy Boys, bottom row, three Russian Reds.
Tasted the Brandy Boy and its OK but nothing like the complex flavour of Brandywine. In fact the taste is still lingering in my mouth and reminds me of Grosse Lisse.
The Black Krims are yummy, I will be growing them again for sure.

Bronwyn, these Polish tommys are from seeds from my neighbour that came from his father in law. I suspect they originated (around here anyway), from an old hermit called Spooks who used to be the caretaker of the old tip. He lived on the outskirts of town and grew tommys in the paddock in front of his house. He sold the seedlings and was said to have lots of varieties not available in the nurserys.
They are a winner I reckon. The one I grew is in a smallish pot and still produced nice size toms. I have taken a cutting off him and will see how he goes in the greenhouse.
I have saved a lot of seeds from them to share if anyone wants some.

My picture isn't nearly as impressive as everyone elses - but after a week of over 40ºC I am totally grateful to have anything to prop up the flagging spirit a bit.

A couple of Red Centre and the little guy in front is a Stupice grown from seed sent by Raymondo - our very first ever home grown all the way from seed heirloom tomato. Proud moment here. Thanks Ray!

Great stuff Allen, just planted out some seed for an early plantout myself and would ya believe it???, My Okra and beans are bein hit by Nematodes!!!!...
Now me is thinkin whether ta go ahead with a plantout or just nemacide the soil n let it sit for wee whiles?????..

They are really nice toms Bronwyn. Full flavoured and not bitey. Some of the better tasting ones I have grown this year, up with the Brandywine suddeths, Cherokee Purples, Zogolas, Black Krims and Akers West Virginias, all of which I will grow again next year.
Ray, you wouldn't like Horsham as we are in a virtual desert. Your part of the world is much better, wish I had the getup and go to move. The wife could get a job anywhere as she is a teacher, but computer nerds like me are a dime a dozen :-(

Hows the fishing Grub? Might head to Portland by myself next weekend for our fishing comp. The fish have been funny this year with all the monster tides, but when they are on they are really on.

I was all set to go game fishing today, but last night I had to take a bunch of people around the harbour then for dinner and then a late night swim. Finished very late, slept on the boat, and must have hit my head or something coz I woke with a terrible headache. So I ducked home to get the chook eggs and pick some tomatoes. These are the cherries. I have some others but don't want to rub it in. I'll take a bunch with me on the boat for dinner tonight and tomorrow when we're at sea. Some marlin and a few dolphin fish are lurking, plus a great weather forecast at last! So to answer ya question its been a late season fishwise but the weather has been the biggest problem.

The reds were supposed to be Box Car Willie. I ordered two packs of seeds from Heirloom Tomatoes and these are what I got. One other NHer has the same thing. Excellent-tastinng tomato, though, so I'm not complaining. Dr Carolyn cherry is my best by far. Very fruity and fun, like a cherry should be. I got seeds to share around. No worries about that. Got seeds for everything from German Queen to Sochulak to Mystery Green and this big ribbed red. The taste is just like rich tomato foliage. A real tomato taste.

Seeds

My seeds for Sochulak have been disappointing - still trying to get some decent ones, so I'm glad you have saved some Grub! Many of mine have black spots, and I don't like saving those, so the good ones are few and far between. Might need to get some from you for German Queen too.

My memory, which is about as impressive as my tomato crop right now, says that poor Spatz was burying a bloated sheep and some chooks on her birthday too. And didn't even have a cake. Yes?

Well, here it is. The last tomato of the season for me. It's from seed from Ozmantis.

Richard's Polish

Sorry it's a little fuzzy. Must learn how to use that blasted camera!

Taste was good, but not exceptional. It covered the palm of my hand.

Richard, did you see my post regarding naming this little number? Carolyn (US forum) suggested you name it to distinguish it from the other versions of Polish.

Suggestions so far include:

Richard's Polish (or Richard's Potato Leaf)
Spooky's Polish (or Spooky's Potato Leaf)
Wimmera Wonder

Any thoughts?

Is that tommy red or pink Ray. Mine have been a pinkish red.
As for a name I think "Richards something", but not Polish, as the jury is out on just what they are. I will talk to the neighbours again, and see if I can get any more info on them. It may turn out that they are a cross of something. I will grow them from seeds I have saved this season, next season, which will be interesting. I plan to grow a few of them as I think they will fit the bill for a mainstay type tommy.

Mine's a pinky red as well Richard. Let me know what you decide name-wise. I chose to eat my lone fruit rather than save seed, so next season I'll be planting more of the same as I still have some of your seeds left. It'll be interesting to see if they remain stable!

I got a phone call today from a guy I used to shear for. He wanted to tell me how great his tommy that he got from me was going, (College Challenger, sigh), and we got to talking about things. He came up with Spooks name as Jack Membrey, and said he had been out to Jacks place before he died, and that he had over a hundred varieties of toms. He also said that the family want to conserve these toms in his memory. I need to get in touch with his family me thinks.
But being of little tact, I am not sure how to go about it :-(
Any ideas on an approach I could use?

Mudlark, no problem about the BRYC seeds. You'll like the tomatoes. They are really nice.

Well, a flowering Native Caper plant is something to be proud of. Yours is a ripper of a plant! Hope you'll get some berries to pickle. Mmmmmhhhh... :)

Yeah Spatz, what are the Black ones?. Amazing range, goes to show what a few days will produce. I see glass and not pottery under them though. Glass can shatter and kill you, pottery is beautiful and benevolent.

The two black ones in the middle are Black Early, the black one on the left hand side is a Paul Robeson. :)

I couldn't fit in some of the names.
Left of Debarao is a Picardy.
Between Black Early and Paul Robeson is a Pink Ponderosa.
The little yellow/orange tomato between the two Black Early is an Orange Cherry.

Another small harvest but we are still getting plenty to eat plus toms off hybrids building up in the shed fridge ready for a batch of relish. Had a Black Krim as well but he went onto a slice of homemade wholegrain bread not long after picking :-)

Those Paul Robesons look fantastic Spatz, how is the taste?
I have seeds for them and they will be going in next year. I have loved the taste of Black Krim and Cherokee Purple, so they are getting another go as well, oh, and along with Carbon :-)

Spatz, would you be so kind as to comment on taste and productivity of Earl's Faux (shortlisted).

Mantis, ditto for Aker's West Virginia. I've read good things about this one and always wanted to grow it. Is it a tasty tomato and prolific?

Before I answer you question Grub, I must savour the aftertaste of the Cherokee Purple and the Kellogs breakfast that I just consumed, on the same wholegrain bread, with ground pepper and salt and some very thinnly sliced onion, washed down with a still fruity 1995 Dalfarras Shiraz.

Thats enough. Yes Grub the Akers West Virginia is very nice tasting and prolific. It was late for me but I think that was me over fertilising again. It grew strongly, and before the first flower truss, split into four equally strong and upward growing leaders. I let all the leaders go, and they all produced a flower truss at the same time and none of them set. After that they have produced very well and still are. I will grow one again next year for sure. I am hoping next years will grow a bit more normally. I really have to learn not to fertilise so heavily.

You're a cruel, cruel man, Mantis. I only have three bottles of wine in the house. Two are $70 bottles, one is a 7ltr bottle. I might try a seed trade for some Akers before the next season or buy some Up Over. Where did you get yours? Also plan to grow OTV Brandywine on the strength of Finbar's recommendations. I trust he saved seeds. My best of the season was the Big Red that tasted like crushed tomato stems. So rich and tomatoey it was great. Like a tomato Grandpa would grow. Got seeds for it.

I have both AWV and Brandywine OTV from TGS. I will drop some in the post. I tried OTV last year in the GH but did not get a fruit off it, so I will stick with BW suddeths that did so well for me this year. Took me a while to find the OTV seeds in my seed draw in the computer desk here. I found an envelope that I had forgotten about from Volvo with seeds from Korney. Another 8 varieties. Now I have no idea which ones to grow next year.
