Mangos from Star Wars

Just wondering what everyone thinks of the R2E2 type (or wahtever it is) of mango. Besides sounding like it's from Star Wars (as my son thinks), I don't think much of them. Give me a good old Bowen any day, if you can get them that is.

I know this isn't a good year for mangoes but I am having trouble buying bowens. The main type sold at the shops lately seems to be R2E2 but they taste like a hybrid of the turpentine variety and the kids won't eat them. I usually buy them by the tray but the last tray I bought turned out to be these - if I read the box properly I would have realised it. At least they made nice ice-cream.

I agree with you there GW.
There are a lot of them sold here at the markets but I always go for the Bowens after trying the R2E2 just once.
They are so big and inviting though aren't they ?

I also agree. I bought one thinking - "wow this looks great and is big" But once we cut it open and ate it was very dissapointing. Sure it was less fibrous, but it was just slightly strange tasting, and didn't have the acidity that I like in my mangos.

I have also seen the new "calypso" mango's but haven't yet tried them yet as I am very much a "buy if they smell nice" person and I have found the Calypsos look great but have no aroma whatsoever.
Anyone have any comments on calypsos?

Probably another example of the supermarket mentality - look great, transport and store well - who cares about the taste!

I've seen the Calypso but wasn't game to try them after R2E2s. I've also noticed the lack of smell. Can't wait until my trees are big enough - that is if the horse stops eating them :(

Yep hate the R2E2. They are great looking though.

My favourites are the bowen followed by oxhearts and bannanas. Although, living in the ACT now, I never see oxhearts or bannana mangoes.

I always thought the lack of smell was due to gas ripening as I often come across mangoes (usually out of season) in Canberra that look ripe but have no smell.

A friend bought me some over Xmas and they looked ripe but were like stones when we cut one. The rest rotted before they softened. Yuk.

g'day g/h,

you still lurking here a bit as well?

yeh sounds like r2d2 doesn't it and the taste probably about the same, developed for production purposes only for good returns and impressive looks.

can't beat a bowen as you say.

nearly time to pull pin the on g/w even in their forums things are pretty quiet.
