Hi all,

I have never posted in this forum.
I am interested to know how many of you are from Tasmania and what your thoughts of climate and growing conditions are.A friend is thinking of relocating there,he wants to grow magnolias there-do they do well?-do many nurseries carry them?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers

My thoughts on the climate depend on whether it raining, blowing a gale, reezing or scorching hot! We get four ( sometimes 8) distinct seasons and are classfied temperate to cool. Some higher areas get snow and some coastal areas get a bit of frost in winter - it varies - there are many micro-climates. For example, down the Tamar where roughie lives is very different to the windswept area that I live. The river valleys are well sheltered in the main. Magnolias do really well here - like Rhododendrons and Camellias they like a cold overwintering. They are not keen on high winds so pick the location. Your friend would have no trouble sourcing supplies. Depends where you friend settles but they do seem to thrive in most conditions particularly like growing in the lee of walls where they can get reflected warmth and shelter. We had them in Hobart and have just planted one in the north.

Cheers

You can't go past the Botanial gardens - this is one of the loveliest I've seen around the world and you need at least a half day. I haven't lived there for nearly 4 years so am a bit out of touch with the gardens, but if you find out about the Open Gardens scheme because autumn gardens are really special here. New Norfolk and Huonville might have some open. In the city there are several parks my favourite is St David's near Salamanca Place.

Enjoy your visit, bring your woollies, it got down to 9 last night.
