Slaters

hi everyone, Im having problems with my basil this year, well actually I think it's slaters eating them. I planted two seedlings in a tub, they were just getting up and running, then one morning I discovered one of them was completely gone, just a stub in the ground. I figured, no problem, I still have another one, and then a number of days later, it was toppled, just lying on top of the soil. I searched around for snails and slugs, couldnt see any, and I dont have a problem with them in my garden, but when I pulled back the straw mulch, and the tub is just crawling with slaters! I mean it's just alive with them. do you think it's the slaters eating my basil seedlings?

I have two more seedlings ready to go in now, but Im too scared to plant them in there. should I get rid of the slaters? and how do i do it without pesticides? I tried the scrunching up wet paper trick, theyre supposed to crawl inside it so I could dispose of them, but no these slaters are too clever for that, theyre all sitting underneath it.

any suggestions? btw, I grow my basil in compost so that's whats in the tub and why the slaters, but I have pots and tubs with other basil plants just the same, and they arent being bothered at all.

Boiling water poured on them does the trick, but not while the plants are in there of course.
