Fruit Fly and Tomatoes in Sydney!

Have people had much success with tomatoes this year in Sydney/the East Coast? Last year was terrible I heard.
I've grown cherry tomatoes this year, and had very little problem, but would love to give other varieties a go this next season.
Do people have much success using bags (cloth/paper)? Any other effective methods?

g'day chris,

got some ideas on fruit fly control on our web site on the remedies page. even if you start a program now in the build up to next summer keep them going through winter.

I was never much bothered by fruit fly in Sydney, but Grub, living not all that far away, complained about them.

Huge problem here. Already I have tommies with maggots in them. Lost my first German Red Strawberry, But it's WAY better than last year.

Now here are some tips. I broke many of these rules before I had a fruit fly problem. This year looks better, because:

1. I never ever put fruit in the compost pile.
2. I clean-up all fallen fruit from the lemon and mandarin tree.
3. I spray with a pyrethrum once or twice a fortnight.
4. I believe in seasonal fluctuations and don't think I will have two bad years in a row.

Also, an elderly man up the road has a backyard full of mango trees.

But do make space for more tomatoes :)Grub

Thanks for that. I'm more optimistic now. Will certainly give them a go the next season!
