Lithops. pleiospilos, etc

| I am just starting a collection of lithops, pleiospilos and other neat looking succulents. I am even newer than a beginner in regard to their care. Do they actually need to live in full sun? I'd like to have them on my front patio which is always bright but with diffuse sunlight not direct. How often should I water them? I bought one I called 'Rocky' but I over watered him and he burst. :( His leaves completely disappeared - is it worth keeping the remains under the surface to see if he regrows any more leaves or is he a total goner? I bought some cactii and succulent potting mix to repot store bought plants into for better drainage, am I on the right track? Where, on Brisbane's northside, can I get more of these amazing plants. So far, I have only been able to get them at K-Mart & Big W (of all places!). Is there a nursery that specialises in them that I can go to? I would love to get some of the 'window' type plants, like 'baby's toes,' does anyone know where I might find them? Heaps of questions, I know - I hope you don't mind. :) |

| PS Now I'm not sure if it is over-watering that is the problem. I haven't watered for a while now and one of my other plants has 'collapsed.' The leaves are turning to mush and they are 'dissolving' when touched. Help! |

Mesembryanthums (Lithops, pleiospilos, baby's toes etc) would not grow all that well in Brisbanes hot humid climate. Need to be trying plants that are happy with this type of conditions. There is a very active group of Cactus and Succulent growers in the Brisbane area. Their details would be on the web. Joining this group you would have access to all the relevant info and plants too. Good Luck. |

My Lithops died with too much love and attention from me,I tried everything to save it, but failed. It was the only one I'd ever seen for sale, up here in the tropics. I managed to buy a packet of seeds in a supermarket some years ago,I have only just found them,I have just planted them I am not hopeful, can anyone tell me the best way to start the seeds of? wet? dry?........help |

Here is a vastly better link. Brisbane had a mesemb expert who had the largest collection of Lithops and other mesembs probably ever gathered together in one place in Australia. I am not sure if he is still there. Many of his plants will still be circulating there. He grew many thousands from seed. Newby |

| I purchased some last week at my local bunnings but i believe they each do their own orders so ring firsrt. I have had grasshoppers/snails eat a whole plant overnight so guard carefully. |

| I hear there will be lots of rare and interesting mesembs for sale at the Mt Coot-Tha, Brisbane Show, Queen's Birthday Weekend, June. |

| I hear that the mesemb expert runs a forum called Succulents grown in Oz. |
