Pachypodium (Madagascar Palm) - watering advice please

I have paid (what I think is) an extraordinary amount of money for a Pachypodium lamerei for my boss for Xmas. It is a gorgeous specimen, and he is well worth the expense. HOWEVER, the challenge now is to keep it happy and healthy until I can give it to him at Christmas. I'm prepared to move it around my rather sheltered courtyard to follow the sun for it, but all my research gives conflicting reports on watering. The nursery I bought it from says not to water it. 'It will get enough from whatever rain' (like hello, it's a drought in Sydney at the moment). The label says to water it every now and then. Some website discussion groups have suggested that it needs a lot more water than elsewhere suggested. HELP! It's developing lots of leaves from the top, which I've read is when it needs water. Also, feeding? As you can imagine I want it to look wonderful when I give it to him, and as I usually only grow ferns and other light shade tropical types I'm at a loss. I stumbled across this Australian site and think it is a marvellous venue. I'm sure someone out there can help me.

P. lamerei is grown extensively and very easily here in Brisbane, Qld. Often it is grown in-ground as I do here in the mountains surrounded by rainforest north west of the city. The species therefore copes well with our very erratic summer rains that at (rare) times can be torrential. A well known commercial grower here waters his potted plants extremely freely (at least daily) in all warm/hot weather permitting very rapid growth. This practise is best left to experienced cultivators. A good rule is to ensure the leaves never ever wilt. Plants may be kept much drier when leaf drop occurs in the cooler months. However in mild winter weather always allow a little water - just enough to ensure root systems stay healthy.

I have mine in pots, one is now about 5ft tall, and they get watered in Summer every 3 to 3 days (if no rain has fallen) and in the cooler months weekly or fortnightly depending on leaf loss, but mine are potted in a cacti/ordinary potting mix which drys extremely well. If you only have to keep it till Christmas err on the dryer side most plants are lost due to overwatering, especially is someone has potted it in normal potting mix. Hope this helps.

If it's small, keep it out of the cold. Even a mild winter like ours in Arizona killed mine. I water the surviving plant about once every week or two, and then sparingly.
