Cactus ID & Some Questions

Posted by cryptof (My Page) on

G'day,

I was hoping someone would please be able to ID this poor sick looking cactus I rescued from my mother's garden (Photo links are below).

Also, does anybody have any tips on how to bring it back to good health?

And does anybody know what the white powdery stuff is that is building up on the pot?

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

The picture you refer to is Trichocereus scopulicola. The whitish scars you see are spider mite attacks.

Thanks mate!
I had a feeling it was a scopulicola, although someone else IDed it as a T. pachanoi.
Spider mites hey.. I had better get myself some bug killer then.
Do you think I should repot it? I would like to keep on growing it. Should I fertilise it?
Thanks again :)

If you want good growth, yes, repot it - in fact, put into the ground, preferably a sunny spot with excellent drainage. Yes, you can add general purpose fertilizer - but not too much as it will result in distorted growth.
